So I am considering using the 1 million kilo challenge (
http://www.1millionkilochallenge.com.au/home) as a fundraising event for either Mater Hospital (specifically, palliative care nursing), Blue Care (those ladies are amazing) or princess alexandra hospital cancer research (with intention of asking Dr Pullar if there is a specific initiative within that division that he would like to see the donation go to).
It's a little different from selling chocolates, so I guess I am wondering if after an expensive holiday season, people would be willing to donate to something like that? I'm not looking to lock people into handing over cash yet (I haven't set it up yet, and the challenged doesnt' officially start till the 30th of Jan) - just a general expression of interest.
To fill you in, yes it's all Krystle related.
The palliative care nurses were amazing - some of them even came in on their days off to keep her company. Blue Care? Incredible. They loved her almost as much as we did and where kind, considerate and loving to the Waldocks and a great support to me when I saw them to. Dr Andrew Pullar was the Oncologist - he worked his arse off to come up with anything and everything he could to give Krystle the choice in her care. He popped in to see her, gave her the best interns and managed to keep calm in the face of me, Krystles friends (most as loud and domineering as me) and my family (seriously, the man needs a medal). So, while he is more than likely professionally bound to say, "just donate to the PAH Cancer research Foundation", I would like to give him his chance to provide input into the cause.
The idea of course, would be to do things like:
- Get donation pledges for if I reach a certain goal
- Get sponsored per centimeter
- Get sponsored per kilo
- Ask for general donations
- Encourage other people to join so we can form a team and they can help raise money (I am pretty sure Krystle's friend Hayley is going to do this with me, but she is going to check out t&c's on the site first)
- Make use of the free on-site dietician at work to take official measurements from week to week
- Hold weekly healthy snack stalls (sell low calorie sweets and savouries and maybe a fundraising morning tea) at work
If I go with raising money for the PAH Cancer Research Council, I could probably get a whole bucketload more support through marketing and communications to, and probably quite a few more team members.
It is a 10 week challenge. So, I figure 10kg is probably a good goal - challenging, but from all reports, achievable.
It starts on the 30th of Jan this year and whatever happens, I have signed up as an individual.
Frankly, my weight loss motivation is almost entirely externally motivated and I think with an external motivator like giving back to those who gave to Krystle, I will do well. Plus, of course, what's in it for me is getting a different shape, and getting lighter. :)
Honestly, I am nervous.
I haven't done sponsorship style fundraising since high school and I am a little worried that promoting the cause would be seen as pushing friendships, harassment or being selfish. Plus, given that the holiday season is just passing, I am worried about people feeling pressured after spending all their cash on Christmas etc.
So... to ease my nerves, do you think people would contribute to something like that? (Again, I am not looking for commitments to donate or sponsor at this point - just thoughts and feedback)
