Part nine! Ok, for those wondering - this is an AU where I basically make up an incestuous relationship between Felix Gaeta and Laura Roslin... mostly to make the point that incest isn't some hot sexy "two brother fucking is so goddamn adorable" thing. And then it sorta grew into a creepy story. So AU, incest, and when last we left, Roslin had set up the blind drop for Felix and the resistance and she and Felix shared their first conversation that didnt end in hot sexy fun time or an ugly arguement. It's New Caprica and things are getting tense....
“It looks good,” Felix said as he looked at the row of potted plants. The little garden was essentially two tables and set of shelves loaded with sprouting plants. He was surprised at the variety. “These are potato plants… where did they come from?”
Laura shrugged. “One of the children, an orphan, brought seed potatoes in. I decided not to ask where they came from. If the potatoes survive, our agricultural plan is to reinvest the entire crop into more plantings.”
Rather hopeful, Felix thought, for what amounted to six plants but potatoes were a crop that the people desperately needed to protect. “And you have yams, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, cilantro, peppermint… even broccoli…this is excellent.” He meant it. The colony had been struggling with growing its own food for some time, and the agro ship had been with the fleet. People tended to eat vegetables as soon as they were harvested, without saving seeds. It was hard to make starving people understand the necessity.
“The children really enjoyed the lessons you prepared,” Laura said after a moment. “They’re very excited about having a role in making the colony grow…. Regardless of where the colony is.”
Dangerous talk but they were alone and his opinion of how the Cylons gathered intelligence had dropped in the last month. They were vicious and violent and they played with human lives like they were toys, but he was utterly positive that they weren’t paying much attention to Roslin. They suspected she was involved in the resistance but they had bigger things to worry about. Like suicide bombers, for example. Which made what he needed to say easier in that he could be more open. “If there was… a sudden storm from above… you should have a plan to get this moved inside.”
Her eyes narrowed. “There is a plan, actually… are you expecting a storm?”
Felix thought about the codes he had dropped off. She would know soon enough what he had done. But…. “I think you need to be incredibly careful right now. I’ve done what I can and when they find out, they’ll kill me. We’re only getting the one chance. Security is cracking down, they have someone close to Tigh, which means it’s a matter of time before they have a major round up.”
She nodded, her eyes growing hard. Already considering how difficult it was going to be, he thought appreciatively. He couldn’t think of any plan to rescue them that didn’t involve losing one of the battlestars, and a lot of people on the ground. She gestured to the rows of pots. “I’ll make sure the garden gets put inside the Devero tonight. The children would be disappointed if something happened.”
Felix looked around , making sure no one was close by. In a low, soft voice, the sort of voice he hadn’t used with her since their last night together so long ago, he said carefully, “There’s talk about lists. Your name comes up a lot. If your name goes on a list… I can’t get it off without risking the one chance we all have.” It surprised him, how much it hurt to say.
She nodded, and then pulled him into a hug. “Don’t do anything to risk that chance, Felix,” she whispered. For a moment, that was all they did, hug, and then she pushed him away gently. She turned away, and he was certain she was wiping her eyes. He was too shocked to do more than stand there. After a moment she seemed to pull herself together. “I have something for you… The children wanted to thank you for helping them.”
A lie, of course, Felix thought ruefully. Most of the younger children were pleasant but frightened of strangers in the classroom and the older ones clearly heard stories at home about him. Laura rummaged on one of the tables and then held out two plants to him. He didn’t take them. One was a small ornamental rose plant that they had coaxed back to life from someone’s forgotten cabin. The other was one of several plants that he hadn’t recognized. “It’s not necessary…”
“Nothing is necessary, Felix.” She said it in that same tone she used when she brought him treats while he was studying. It was even the same phrase, and she seemed to realize it almost instantly. “These are delicate, and need to be inside really. and I thought you might want something cheerful in your office.”
“But it’s your only rose plant,” he said after a moment. “I know… I know you love roses.” She had loved the rose garden at Paul Harrington’s manor. He had figured that out almost as soon as he had entered the home, and had spent a lot of time designing and working on making it better.
“I do, but considering how hard you worked to bring this one back to life, I wanted you to have it.” She put it in his hands and then gestured to the other pot. “These are seedlings from the tea bushes that Cally found. They seem more suited to the cold weather but I thought… just in case.”
Just in case the rescue went sour, he thought grimly. “I’ll put them in my office. I use Billy’s old office… in case you find yourself in the Colonial One.” He took the second plant.
“I doubt that,” Laura said easily. She put a hand on his shoulder. “Be careful, Felix. I want to see these plants alive and healthy when the storm passes.”
He wasn’t sure what made him say it but, “Don’t worry… Everything is going to be all right…” He realized how ridiculous it sounded.
“I know,” Laura said after a long moment. “And… I can’t regret the things I have done, Felix, but I can… wish that I made different choices…. Do you understand that?”
“I do,” he said after a moment. It was more acknowledgement than he had ever expected to get.
