Tufts Panhellenic Council Raises Money for BARCC

Mar 22, 2010 12:21

The general tone of this blog has been unfortunately very negative, but I wanted to highlight something I found on the Tufts Daily site. I first saw the headline “Panhellenic Council raises funds for rape crisis center in show of solidarity” and was very excited, thinking that Tufts was going to have an on-campus resource to compliment what BARCC offers. Instead, the clip highlights the Panhellenic Council deciding to choose the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center as the beneficiary of their bake sales. In addition, they are going to take part in BARCC’s annual Walk for Change on April 11th.

I applaud the Council for recognizing what an invaluable asset BARCC is for survivors - especially on campus. I personally have gone to BARCC for support when Tufts failed to provide what they should have. I know that many students have turned to BARCC and I am one of many from Tufts that are deeply thankful that the Boston area even has this resource.

However, the existence of BARCC does not mean that Tufts is off the hook. BARCC’s services are in high demand due to severe limit of their availabilities in other communities (i.e. college campuses). Tufts needs to create and foster an environment where students can trust to be treated well and actually will be.

I urge you to donate or support BARCC anyway you can. It has saved many lives, including mine.

This is a great reminder that there are students at Tufts that care about rape. This isn’t just the concern of a select few. People from any background can recognize the complexities and high need to address sexual assault. I hope students can come together to mobilize even more on campus to address the specific Tufts community’s needs.
