Just a meandering thought...

Brought on by the book I just finished, a conversation and my inner-monologue.

No one has the right to judge anyone but themselves. To spin that around, the only judgement of yourself that will ever matter is your own. In the end no one judges you, not even God*. God just holds the mirror I think.

*Used to connotate the Divine in whatever form ( Read more... )

Nonononono, that's where we're not understanding each other. I'm not speaking from a level of society. No, there are laws, and it's important that there are. I'm not talking about within society, within society I hold the *opposite* view. I totally agree with you that we are growing too isolated and hands-off.

I'm talking about personal "morality" (parenthesis used because I myself don't really hold to morality, I prefer ethics), and in fact part of this belief stems from my feeling that society is trying to become less accountable for it's actions, and use the broad sweeping moralities that have been layed out before them as the excuse.

Why worry about punishing someone who does something wrong? They're going to Hell, but we get to go to Heaven. *He's* a sinner, but we're good little boys and girls so we get the God-loving. It's lazy and it's just not right. But there is no broad sweeping morality that determines the fate of your soul, if any. You've got to be a good and responsible person here and know, not follow 10 rules or anything.

No one has the right to judge you as a person, as a human being, but we do have a right and a *responsibility* to judge your actions. Make more sense?

I still don't agree. It is not society that is getting lazy, it's the individuals. Society is taking on more and more of the responsibility for the things people do. The individual is no longer at fault. The kid that shoots up a school is pitied because he was bullied by the jocks. The woman drowns her kids because her new boyfriend didn't like kids. Schools are now charged with raising children and installing appropiate value systems in the place of family and community. It's bullshit, I hate it, and I'm not buying it. We are not ~just~ individuals, we are still part of something greater than ourselves and both the individuals and society would do well to remember that.

Furthermore, not that I'm religious or anything, but anyone who is a Christian can tell you that you are not saved by good works, but by God's grace alone. A true Christian does not get on some moral-superiority kick. He sees the evil in the world and knows compassion. He may be outraged, he may be angry, but that is this harsh existence we live in. There is no cosmic payoff for being a goody-two-shoes, there is only who you want to be. What kind of person do you want to be? Your actions define you, and divine examples are not a bad way to go, be it Jesus, Buddha, or Mohammed. He knows that his soul is no more or less saved than a mass murderer and feels no resulting superiority.

My next question is: Who cares what some narrow-minded-stick-up-the-ass person thinks about you? I don't. Let them on their high-horse judge me. I see nothing but their lack of compassion and will try not to treat people like they do. That is all that can be done.
