New Hero: Shane Meadows

I saw four films on the flight back from England:

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
This movie was quite enjoyable, though a little goofy. They did a good job at making it have the film noir look with the dramatic lighting and they captured the feel of the 1930’s serial.

The Grudge
Needless to say, being home by myself was not fun last night. I think the Japanese have cornered the market on modern horror and ultra-violent films.

The Machinist
Christian Bale did a great job at playing a man haunted by a mistake. The movie had me going the entire time (only slowing for some necessary exposition in the middle). Another bonus is seeing Jennifer Jason Leigh’s boobs… boobs are always a bonus.

Dead Man’s Shoes
This was my favorite of the four films. A quietly violent film about revenge was twisted and disturbing. I was even more impressed when I read what the Toronto Film Festival had
this to say about the director:

Shane Meadows was born in Uttoxeter, England. A self-taught filmmaker, he honed his craft by directing one short film every month for a year. Several of his films have screened at the Festival, including the short Where’s the Money Ronnie? (96) and the features Small Time (96), TwentyFourSeven (97), A Room for Romeo Brass (99), Once Upon a Time in the Midlands (02) and Dead Man’s Shoes (04).

One short per month... how freakin cool! That is what I want to do (I guess I better get started!).
