Home Depot, as well as several other retail stores in the area sell 4.25lb propane tanks. I figured I'd buy one, since it was an ideal size to use with a portable grill. The full tank is very easy to carry with one hand, can fit in a backpack, and has more than enough gas to run the grill continuously for 8 hours. So... why am I lugging my 20lb tank around the beach?
I managed to snag one of these little tanks for $45. It was *waaay* up on the shelf, high enough to require a staircase to get. They don't sell too well, which surprises me -- they're easier to deal with than the 1lb bottles once you get the adapter hose. Shiny, white, new tank in hand, I went to get it filled with propane and found out why the tanks aren't more popular.
Stop 1: "You probably want to get that filled somewhere else. We have a minimum charge of $22.50!" (that's a full 20lb tank)
Stop 2: "We have a minimum charge, it's $19.50" (that's also a full 20lb tank at their rate)
Stop 3: "HAHAHAHA!! Nobody is going to sell you that little propane!!"
If I can't get the tank filled, it's useless to me. I returned it.
Turns out that 4.25lb of propane is a very small amount. The places that fill tanks around here consider the 20lb/5 gal tanks a minimum. Oh well.
