My first tutorial!

Program Used: PSP X2
Involves: Brushes, layers, & textures.
Works best with: Black & white images.
Nine steps. Should be translatable.

1. I started with this image, then cropped & resized it to get this:

2. Brighten the image by going to Adjust > Brightness & Contrast > Brightness/Contrast [Shift+B shortcut for PSP]. Set the Brightness to +10 and the Contrast to +20. Depending on the image, your settings may be different. The goal is to make it brighter and more contrasted.

3. Resize the image to between 70 & 80 pixels square, depending on the background you'll be using.

4. Using this brush [download here @ deviantart]

use the eraser brush to erase a bit of the edges around the image. You'll have to rotate the brush so you can use the torn side on all the edges.

5. Open the texture or image you want to use as your background.
I used this one from
77words

6. Copy & paste your first image onto the texture and position it how you like. Depending on the image & the background, you may need to use the eraser brush again to make sure it blends well.

7. Duplicate the texture layer, drag it to the top, and set it to Multiply 60%

8. Duplicate the image layer, drag it to the top, and set it to Luminance (L) 100% so it brings out some of the colors in the texture.

9. It looks good, but I wanted a little something more.
Make a new raster layer & select #000000 as your foreground color. You can use other complimentary colors depending on your image.
Use this brush [download here @ deviantart]

to outline the most visible edges [in this case, the left & bottom].
Et, voila, you're done!

Other examples using this method:

To get the text effect on the second one, I made a new raster layer, used a text brush, and set the layer to Luminance (L) 100% to get the same effect as the image layer.

Remember, this should only be used as a guide, you may need to adjust your settings depending on the images used. You may also want to already have your image pasted on the background before you erase the edges, whatever works best for you.
Don't be afraid to experiment with other brushes and text. I'd love to see how it turned out for you.

Comments would be really helpful, as this is my first tutorial and I'd like to know how I did.
