Miscellaneous drabbles from various series I particularly enjoy. :D

Traveler
Series: Mushi-shi
Word count: 100

He prays for the invisible, the things we cannot see and fear. There is rarely respect for them because that usually requires comprehension and he understands that it is hard earned. So whenever he can, he offers them a tip of the figurative hat from one living being to another. In return, they gather around and show him a world behind the one we see. There is danger, there is fascination. It is the way things are. The cycle continues; we consume, they consume, and life goes on.

And once in a while, he lets himself go and become them.

Leaving
Based loosely on numerous brothels featured on Samurai Champloo.
Word count: 100

The name I whisper isn’t yours. The songs I sing aren’t for you. The smile on my face isn’t given toward you. This world and time aren’t for you and me. Come back tomorrow, when the dusk has just begun and the night still suckles our breasts. Come back tomorrow, with the gold coins you shine and promise to part. Don’t lose yourself in this floating boat of dreams because you will never find your way out. Take your coat, take your shoes, and take this love to your wife. When you return, remember me none and kiss your child.

A Madarui Lullaby
Series: Sex Pistols
Word count: 50

Men who aren’t men,
women who aren’t women.
Fathers who are mothers,
mothers who become fathers.
Listen to your children
in their deep slumbers.

Let no worries cloud their dreams
of old past and young future.
The grass is wild,
the river is free,
breathe, breathe
and we’ll live forever.

Epilogue
Series: Harem de Hitori
Word count: 200

This is an old, old tale.

A long time ago, there was a kingdom ruled by a kind king. He had by his side a concubine named Hanabishi who always accompanied his lord wherever he went. For years they lived happily together, until one day the king died of old age.

The grieving Hanabishi cried to the heavens, asking for another day with his king. He offered jewels, rare silks, and mountains of gold for a glimpse of his beloved, but the heavens kept its silence. In his last resort, Hanabishi took the last sugar cube his king had given him, his most precious treasure, and threw it high into the sky.

A great miracle happened.

The heavens opened and revealed a long stairway made of spun sugar descending down onto earth. The king himself came down and took beautiful Hanabishi by hand. Together they climbed the stairs and became one with the stars. That day, the rain came pouring throughout the whole kingdom. People said it was the sweetest tasting water ever and everything it touched blossomed.

Later, the rain became a creek, and the creek became a river. It still exists today.

This is an old, old tale.

August Twentieth
Series: Hanazakari no Kimitachi e
Word count: 100

Your birthday passed without any fuss. It was just an empty seat and me, facing each other in a small eatery near our old school. The place is still haunted, by the way. Lots of new inhabitants. I had spaghetti and the seat stared at its sparkling cider. We did not make a fetching picture, I’m afraid. The waitress thought I was waiting for a lover to show up. How romantic. I, however, knew better. You will never come because you are celebrating it somewhere else. Still, I toasted for your health, career, and happiness. The usual.

Happy birthday, friend.

The Hunt
Series: Petshop of Horrors
Word count: 100

The world I search and ransack, chasing you who doesn’t want to be found. Why, I don’t know, when your face and secretive smile hide that hideous anomaly you call moral.

You, not unlike the creatures you keep, cover your traces well, leading me on a tight noose. This is urgent, my need to rip open your chest and see if you have a heart. I am sure you are counting on this impatient beast. It will take me to the day you no longer wish to be pursued.

Until then I am still a pawn in your game, D.
