Now this is the president I fucking voted for.

Today President Obama held an event to draw attention to new initiatives to fund and promote science and mathematics education in the U.S. Among the attendees were the MythBusters (whoo!).

The video of the event is here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2009/11/23/next-generation-innovators

I have long held that the most important thing we can do is provide better education. Damn the cliche, but knowledge is power. An education that gives a child the knowledge of how to understand and interact with the world, and the skills and experience to further educate himself when he encounters something unfamiliar that he needs to understand, will be the most valuable thing you can give to that child.

Thankfully, Obama seems to understand that while parents and teachers can be strong positive influences, encouraging children to seek knowledge, if we can foster a national environment that values and rewards education, it makes it easier for skilled people to want to take jobs as teachers, for parents to put in the effort to see to it that their kids work hard in school, and for students to actually want to learn.

I sorta hate the whole 'share this' meme thing, but if you think that education is truly important, please share this link with your friends and family.
