Tony Abbott, Australia's minister in charge of the Health portfolio, has lost his campaign to control whether and how the abortion drug RU486 is used in Australia.
Abbott, a recognised religious figure in the Australian government was arguing on grounds that reeked of religious beleifs held by the Catholic church.
The quote I base this on is...
"We have a bizarre double standard in this country where someone who kills a pregnant woman's baby is guilty of murder but a woman who aborts an unborn baby is simply exercising choice."
Now, being male I have never really weighed into this debate, it is a very personal thing for a woman to decide to abort an unborn baby and from what I have been told, something that is very rarely done without much thought. I will never understand the emotional ups and downs that would obviously go hand in hand with this decision.
If Abbott was campaigning to ban this drug based on clinical studies that showed abnormal and potentially harmful side effects to the user, so be it, thats what he should do. To base it on a moral opinion based on what apears to be personal beleifs, thats selfish and short sighted.
Mr. Abbott, please stand away from the pills, you no longer have control over them, nor a persons choice on how they live their lives.
Mr. Abbott, please start basing your political decisions on the public climate and the betterment of the Australian people, not the opinions of the church.
Oh how I yearn for the day that there is an viable Australian political party that is moderately left of center.
