Today we sat down and watched the remastered version of Day of the Dumpster. We're not going to do a full recap, since you can read our very first recap
here, but we do have a few things to talk about.
Okay, so yes, they changed things. It's not exactly the show everyone remembers. People have been sulking about it and saying that it ruined Power Rangers.
We don't agree. In fact, we liked most of the changes. You've got to understand, to us, season 1 is pretty magical. It's what started it all. Rewatching the first episode is like coming home in a way - it is everything that we love about the show. Yes, it's super cheesy, and the writing is bad, and the acting leaves a lot to be desired, but this is our show! It's cheesy and glorious, and frankly, we're just glad that it's showing on tv again.
So let's go through the changes. The big thing (and the thing that kept us from bitching) is that they kept the music. We love the music. The music makes the show. If we had lost the music, we would also probably be going around yelling that they ruined Power Rangers and destroyed our childhoods. But we got to keep the music, so yay!
We don't actually mind the new theme song/introduction. We like the new scene that they chose for Zack, and we like hearing Skull's laugh. Even the "Go go!" doesn't bother us, because they did an incredibly good job cleaning up all of the effects.
To the show itself - they did a much better job of making the beginning actually seem like space. And cleaning up the sound/video. And we don't mind the little captions introducing everyone. (This is probably because I read a lot of comics, home of the unnecessary captions. At least the older ones. :D) We really like the symbols everybody gets for the morphing. It makes us happy in that adorable big googly anime eyes way.
Okay, we could do without the shaky cam, but even RPM had that problem, so we're giving up on that fight. We also could do without the "Bif!" "Bam!" "Pow!" but well, we both watched the 1960s Batman, and we enjoy it. We don't particularly like it, but it isn't really that bad.
They kept the important things, which is the show itself. And yeah, they made some changes. But here's what we're getting - 17 years later there's still Power Rangers on our tv. And maybe somewhere there's a kid watching it for the first time, and maybe 17 years from now they'll still be talking about this little show, and how much it impacted their lives.
And in the meantime, maybe fandom will all band together and write some more porn fic?
