i can relate so much, though. i feel the exact same way about torchwood - SUCH POTENTIAL. i'm sure that by the time i'm eighty, i'll still be pissed with russell t davies for screwing it up. and after children of earth there was a giant surge of fix-it fics, because things had to be fixed, obviously. your fandom could go the same way. perhaps merlin-fans that have left will be drawn back in now they know it's the last season... i don't know for sure, of course, and i do get your fear. i hope merlin can perhaps be one of those hp-like fandoms that keeps going strong even after the canon has ended.
i've started watching merlin again too - i've seen the first two season and then gave up because every episode just made me angrier about the way they wrote the female characters. i think season five is much better, though. it's still missing a bit of character development, indeed, but at least it's a bit darker now, which i greatly appreciate. if this had been season two or three, i definitely would have kept watching. but as you say, as a final season, this is just a bit underwhelming, especially as arthur is still completely oblivious as to merlin's magical capabilities. i don't get why they are waiting so long for him to find out - i really honestly don't.
