Old man Cartiledge

The Charnock clan are in Seattle, visiting from London. Graham & Pat published a legendary fanzine called Wrinkled Shrew in the '70s, and the three issues I've read are terrific. (Well, two of the three anyway.) Along for the vacation are sons James and Dan, and James's girlfriend, Michelle.

I met Graham at the 2003 Eastercon on my TAFF trip. It was the first convention he'd gone to in yoinks, having gafiated to raise the kids or something. It was a particularly fannish Eastercon, or so I've been told, and he had come to say hi to some of the old '70s gang. He was surprised and pleased when I told him I'd read Wrinkled Shrew, and I gave him a copy of Chunga. He gave a whacked performance with his guitar as Deaf Lemon Astral on the Astral Leauge Comeback Tour, and had Fan Guest of Honor Chris Evans (an old friend of his) read Pat's hysterical piece, "The Descent of Women: Telling All About How They Came Down From the Trees". As Graham later wrote of my reaction to this performance, "he clapped and hooted and soiled his pants." (Well, two out of three anyway.) A couple of weeks later, he submitted an article to Chunga, and now, three years later, he has become an astral force in fanzines again, having published two of his own already this year and seemingly placing articles in every other fanzine coming out lately, sometimes even under his real name. (Philip Cartiledge and Frank Looney are amongst his pseudonyms.)

John D. Berry, carl juarez, and I had dinner with the Charnocks at the Elysian last night, and I learned that Dan has just earned a degree with honors in microbiology. Smart kid! Afterwards, we hied ourselves to Vanguard chez Carrie Root and Andy Hooper (where I was surprised and delighted to see iggyspawn for the first time in years as well). I told Graham that gerisullivan had showed me a couple of the Old Man videos he has put up at youtube (search "old man cartiledge" and you'll likely find a couple) and that I'd found them delightful. Later he filmed an episode that involved pointing the camera at various of us and yattering on about nothing, occasionally forgetting to use his screechy Old Man voice while we grinned rigidly like deer caught in the camera lights. He has threatened to put this disaster on youtube as well, but let's hope that sobriety brings a new perspective.

The Charnocks will be heading down the coast to the Bay Area before too long. Hope those of you down there get a chance to meet them. Admission to the Astral Leauge Comeback Tour is free, and it's always worth the price of admission.
