My sister has gone to China to teach ESL for five months. She has been assigned to a town in the
Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which I had never heard of before -- not that I know much about China! I'm very curious what "autonomous region" means. In any event, according to the linked map, it lies between Vietnam to the southwest, Guangdong (Canton)to the east, and Hunan to the northeast.
"Opening up a map of Guangxi, you will see many towering mountains at elevations over 1,000 meters above sea level and some even exceeding 2,000 meters in northern, central and southern Guangxi. The rolling mountains are all covered with dense primeval forests, brimming with rare plants, precious animals and vigorous waterfalls and streams. The region has retained its original natural features while at the same time gone through a period of development."
These days when I think of China, I think of huge cities like Shanghai. I don't think of primeval forests. This notion of primeval forests and rolling mountains makes me sorry that I've decided to pay off my credit card and save some money this year. Most of the rest of my family will be taking the opportunity to travel over there to visit my sister and have a look around. Sounds like a beautiful area! And it would be fun to pop down to Vietnam, too.
Ah well, Corflu in Toronto and Worldcon in LA will have to do for travel this year.
