The Internship

May 31, 2007 20:50

Haven't updated for a while, but that has been mostly on purpose. First, it was finals I was worrying about. Then, I planned to fly out to Oregon so I could interview for an internship and do my WriteOn competition entry.

Most of my grades haven't come in yet, but I've been disappointed so far. I don't understand how I can be going through my classes without getting lost and still ending up so low in the percentile. It's frustrating, and makes me wonder if the grading system really works like it's supposed to. I can't know for sure; the whole thing is behind closed doors.

The WriteOn competition was a little intimidating. 6 pages of text, 14-16 pages of end notes. Ouch, twice the notes as the actual text? I struggled mightily with length, and finished about 3 pages short on the end notes. We'll see how it goes, but considering my grades in legal writing and the difficulty in stretching out that many notes, I'm not confident about getting onto a publication.

Finally, the job hunt. I tried to contact my interviewer before I flew out, but no luck. Can't contact him the first week I'm in Oregon, either. He was sick, so scratch one week. He's too busy catching up from being sick to talk to me, so he'll have me come down the next week to talk to him. Scratch the second week. Third week, I interview with him, but it was a long weekend, so I wouldn't get to hear from him until the next week (this week). Too busy to talk to me yesterday, the day he said he would talk to me, and today he tells me that he's too busy to find the time to show me what I would be doing at the office, so I won't be working for him.

I flew 2000 miles and waited a month just to be told that he was too busy to take me on for the summer.

I'm not giving up quite yet, but this, this was the best I could do? I thought law school would make getting a job easier, not harder. Between that and my grades, I'm starting to doubt what I am even doing at law school in the first place.

Happy thoughts, huh?
