In the midst of it all

So as I was typing out my report for tomorrow (while browsing through a couple of sites *cough*), mom suddenly broke my concentration from the computer by asking me something...

Mom: You know why Lozada is going around universities, talking to the youth?

Me: (sadly, because I haven't been as updated) Hm? Why?

Mom: Because you guys are going to pay for all that's been spent in the scandal... all that money, and the added debt of the country is going to be paid by you, the future working force.

And it sunk in so much that I forgot what I was "googling".

Me: ...wow.

Mom: Yup. And your batch has 1 or 2 years to go before becoming part of the working force? They're going to deduct all that debt through taxes. Mike Arroyo's going to be long-dead and the country will STILL be paying off the debt. You, the youth, will be paying for it.

As a student, I've been having a little difficulty putting myself into my work these past weeks... but after what mom said, I suddenly felt even more impotent, and more concerned about whether there will be something worth working for after I finally graduate.

I really believe in justice. Sometimes I can even be too rigid in finding what should be a "just" punishment or reward for someone. And yes, I know I'm not one to judge... but it doesn't really take a rocket scientist to figure out how disgusting these people in government are proving to be, treating us as if we cannot even remember things just said. Twisting the facts to make everything seem "all right". Worst of all, wearing that plastic smile on their faces, when in another country they might not have enough strength to smile after getting a full beating for their crime.

I'm a humanist, and I do stand up for human rights. But people who abuse their power, and much less, abuse people, ought to get their punishment while they're alive and capable of feeling pain.

*shudder*
