What I mean is this:
It's not that out of order to point out the shortcomings of your rival. After all, if you can't get my vote, at the very least the other guy shouldn't get it either. But for most Americans, the elections are like "Er... I'd rather this guy be president than that guy." And even if what a given president's ideology and politics and even his understanding or morals and ethics are totally the opposite of yours, you simply say "Hey he won this round but we'll get the White House next time". This was the mood with Bill Clinton and George Bush. Both men were/are widely and fiercely opposed by their respective rival parties.
The difference with Obama is McCain is casting him as THE ENEMY. Country first, waving the white flag, terrorism, the "he doesn't see life as you and I do"... Those might be just words and tactics to McCain and his campaign staff, but he is in a position of leadership and people listen to him. For all his womanizing and arrogance Bill Clinton was never The Enemy of The People. For all his idiocy and incompetence and even betrayal (for what Dubya did to V. Plame, people were hanged for doing similar things in the past), he was never The Enemy either.
Both Clinton and Bush have had to face fierce resistance but they both were/are recognized as legitimate American Presidents. What McCain is doing is creating a group of people who will not recognize Barack Obama as a legitimate American or a president, which will be a HUGE problem if he's elected.
