I'll tell you a secret: When I discover a person has read and loved Ender's Game (I've never met anyone who read and disliked it), they automatically go up in my esteem. Furthermore: When I discover that a person has read more of Orson Scott Card's work beyond the Ender series (this includes the Ender's Shadow series), my respect for that person skyrockets.
I can't help it. I read a reference today from Ender's Game and decided to reread it. Bear in mind, I can't keep track of the number of times I've read this book. But as I opened the cover I thought to myself, "No, what I really want to read is 'The Worthing Saga'." Which when I think about it, is OSC's most brilliant masterpiece. After learning that Nate read and loved Ender's Game, I gave him a copy of The Worthing Saga for Christmas with the words "If you loved that, wait until you read this. It changes everything." And it does.
It's odd, but OSC is my all time favorite author. I have more books on my shelf by him than any other author, and that's but a small fraction of his works that I've read. I repeatedly find myself stopping after a passage or single sentence, pausing to say "I love you OSC." laughing out loud, or simply lost in contemplation of what I had just read.
I tell you this: If you ever find a book or author that has this effect on you, so that each time you read it it's as new and awe inspiring as when you first picked it up... then my friend, you have found yourself a companion for life.
