For those of you who are interested, my nephew’s name is Spencer Edward Fraley. Edward was my maternal grandfather’s middle name, and Spencer was the maiden name of Winston Churchill’s mother. Derek wanted to name him Winston, but Jenni said no.

You know who rocks? Andy Cline. That’s who.
I had Andy for two classes my freshman year at Park, English comp 1 and 2. He’s since moved on to MSU (he moved right after that year, so I never got to take any more classes with him). In my desperate attempt to find a third and final professor to write a knowledgeable letter of recommendation for me, I found myself in a situation where I was forced to call upon him for help. A teacher I haven’t had in three years, who I haven’t even talked to for three years.
I called him today and explained my situation to him. Not only is he willing to do it, he’s quite thrilled to hear I’m in the place where I am and looking at grad school so seriously. We had a good twenty minute conversation where we caught up on my academics in the last three years, our views of academia as a whole, graduate schools (mainly UMKC, my first choice and his alma mater for his masters and doctorate). The only thing he asks to see is a sample of some of my recent writing. He’s never read my historical work and is interested to see how I’ve developed since he’s had me in class.
So yes. He rocks indeed. Next time I’m in town I’m supposed to drop in sometime. He gave me his address (turns out I pass his house nearly every time I’m in town).
My next step is figuring out which paper I’m going to send him. I’m biased in that I think they’re all horrible. The strategy is that I’m going to pick out the ones I think are the best, have a few friends read over them, and then take the top two to Westcott and see what he says.
After that (well, more like at the same time) I need to start arranging campus visits and speaking with the department chairs and whatnot.
On top of all of this, I’m trying to help out Derek and Jenni as much as possible. I’ve also got five papers that I’m working on at the moment, several of which are due in very short order.
I wish I remembered what spare time was like.
