So yesterday morning my boyfriend went up a mountain for a four day fast and meditation, in accordance to some native tradition. He prepared for days, and before the hike up he did a sweat lodge to purify himself of earthly happenings. So that means that any blankets or fire starters or anything he needs while up there should be carried by someone else. No earthly burdens. That is where I come in, he had me carry his burden up the hill behind him.
A couple that we are friends with went up at the same time, doing the same thing. The native man guiding all of this drove Kevin's truck up the the back access road since it is a truck that can handle the dirt mountain roads. He prayed to the spirits over both men, set them up in circles of sage and cedar, and gave them final instructions before we all drove back down. It started raining right as we were leaving.
There is a fire at home that we have been taking turns keeping vigils at, and we keep up until they are safely back down the hill. That night at the fire the native man started talking with a smile on his face. "I think I made out pretty well today. I put two white guys in circles up the hill, told them to stay, and closed the doors behind them. Then I took their keys, and drove off with their women. Good day!"
