Livestrong

Jul 09, 2005 12:31

Last night I gave my Livestrong bracelet, which for me was primarily fashion over social responsibility, to a Japanese woman whose husband and son died of cancer. Unaware of the trend into which I had bought, she shamed me with her praise of my contribution to what she came to believe was a phenomenal cause. I will redeem my shallowness, however, in due time. I have been placed in charge of distributing to all of Roi-shi the bracelets.

Edit: This woman.

More details:

Mike: lol - well, even if not done for the good reasons.. the end justifies the means

randomcarbon: yea. but it really wasn't an lol moment.
randomcarbon: she was quite drunk, ended up passing out on the table.
randomcarbon: began crying earlier.

Mike: oh
Mike: well then

randomcarbon: this was a party with work.

Mike: damn

randomcarbon: and she

Mike: ok.. what you posted did not really cover that

randomcarbon: 's always very happy-looking.
12:40
randomcarbon: but clearly... there're things down there that needed resolution.

Mike: guess alcohol got the best

randomcarbon: yea. she didn't eat ANY food.

Mike: hmm
Mike: how old

randomcarbon: past fifty

Mike: both husband and son died?

randomcarbon: but in good shape, used to be a gym teacher.

Mike: damn

randomcarbon: yea
randomcarbon: so, is she alcoholic? or depressed? or limiting her calories? (ie anorexic)?
randomcarbon: Nice nice woman. But, it was disturbing.
randomcarbon: Sad.

Mike: have you ever interacted w/her before at a party?

randomcarbon: met her only a handful of times when i first got here, and that was in the Oh! You just got here! sort of dynamic at work.
randomcarbon: actually, i have a post about here if I remember correctly.
12:45

Mike: could be an evening alcoholic... or.. could have been just a party thing - getting carried away
Mike: with that much tragedy in a life.. alcohol can bring out the depressed memories

randomcarbon: no kidding.

Mike: sometimes people are night time alcoholics
Mike: but.. hard to guess

randomcarbon: Yea.
randomcarbon: I feel bad all the same.

Mike: why?

randomcarbon: For her.

Mike: ya.. ture

randomcarbon: Lot to take.

Mike: true
Mike: she have others in her life?
Mike: other sons/daughters?
Mike: new husband

randomcarbon: I don't know.
randomcarbon: she does have one other son.

Mike: thats good
Mike: so - what was purpose of party the other day?

randomcarbon: end of the first semester is coming up

Mike: lol, sounds like a reason for a party.... "end of 1st semester is near"

randomcarbon: yea. they like their drinks here.
12:55

Mike: thats kinda interesting

randomcarbon: why?

Mike: are they a culture that works hard to play hard?

randomcarbon: hrm.
randomcarbon: perhaps it could be put that way.

Mike: all I can picture is the movies w/the japanese visitors in a kirioki bar drunk on soki and trying to sing in a drunken stupor

randomcarbon: heh, more accurate that i'd like to admit.

Mike: interesting (from the sociology perspective)

randomcarbon: yea.
randomcarbon: but another interesting note:
randomcarbon: this is the third or fourth such party we've had and last night was the first time I let myself drink to get tipsy.

Mike: is that a fear of what might come out?

randomcarbon: General discomfort ... they're my colleagues.
randomcarbon: Not my age.
randomcarbon: youngest person is mid30s.
randomcarbon: And while it's expected here...
Mike: ah.. so you are the "kid"

randomcarbon: there's so much cultural baggage...
randomcarbon: Besides, it would SUCK if I ever got as bad as that woman.
randomcarbon: I don't get drunk often, or wasted even less frequently, but... gotta be prudent

Mike: you must have been at college parties where some girl or guy got completely bombed and became emotional

quotidian
