The Last Words Meme

This is it. The final curtain. You're at the end of your life, and there's someone here you really, really need to say something to before you die.

So there he was. Lying prone on the floor, Riley could barely move. Lucario standing by his side as if guarding his body. Those Galactic fiends. With all his Pokemon preoccupied it was a risky move for him to fight with his aura. But he tried anyway. He fielded them off. Once they had cleared, he had collapsed on the ground with a giant wound across his chest. The blood was seeping through his coat.

"Hah, Lucario. I turned out to be a miserable excuse for an Aura Guardian."

Cyrus stared down at the man, at his own bloodied hands.

"...I told you not to interfere..." he muttered. Though it had been necessary to eliminate the Aura master, taking lives wasn't made easier by that, although it only manifested in him being quieter than usual. His face remained expressionless, stern.

"Do you really think I would have let you and your goons go unimpeded?" Riley coughed and felt his chest weakening. He'd be okay, enough to live for a few days or weeks but it was hurting damnably. "The only thing you're going to is your own destruction."

"Quite the contrary. I will be the only thing not destroyed." He knelt down beside the man. "...why do you continue to fight it? Why do you give your life to defy the salvation of the universe?"

He attempted a laugh. That hurt more than he imagined and it died out as soon as it came out of him so it sounded more like a laugh and a cough combined.

"Because there are things in this world that I would gladly fight and give up my life for. Do I need any other?"

"In this world there is nothing worth fighting for. This world," Cyrus told him, "is beyond saving. It has lost itself to fury and ignorance and so must be purified. You have given your life for nothing."

Why was he amused? Why did Riley feel like laughing again? Okay, so he was chuckling now as he put a hand to his chest to feel his still beating heart.

"You wouldn't understand. You never will."

Riley's eyes glowed blue. He looked at Cyrus' aura which was still as headstrong as it always was, but did he see regret at the back somewhere? Nah, it couldn't have been.

Regret was there, but not in a form Riley or anybody would consider rational. Acting in violence weighed heavily on Cyrus's mind, yet he did so without hesitation. To achieve that ideal world, nothing was too great to bear. Anything was justified for that sake. Any and all sins would be washed away in the purification of the world.

At the glow, Cyrus scowled. "What do you think you can find? It is far too late for you to find any hope."

"No hope, no harm, just another false alarm." Riley eyes returned to their normal colour and he really had to stop himself from laughing too hard. What was this euphoric feeling coursing through him? It was putting him in quite a good natured mood despite the fact that the man who most damned him to his death was next to him.

"As I said, you wouldn't understand. It's something beyond what you can reach and forever will be if you keep going like this."

Another cough as the effort of supressing his laughter shook his chest.

"And yet that you acknowledge 'forever' in my context suggests that you know the truth, that I will ultimately succeed. I will establish the bounds of eternity...but tell me..." Cyrus was confused. What did this man have to gain by opposing him when he would have everything to gain by joining him? "...let me hear what you have to say. What defense could you have for this world?"

"Oh, who said anything about success?"

Lucario had appeared. Salamence and Metagross were not far behind. They were ready to strike at Cyrus, but Lucario felt the air and bade them keep their distance. This was a matter between them.

"You can strive but perhaps you underestimate the essence that drives all beings in this world. The world is finite. The soul acknowledges it. And there lies the crux of the matter - happiness is only found in the finite existence."

"Happiness is only a delusion," Cyrus dismissed. "Only a means people use to convince themselves that they are safe, ignoring the greater world in the process. It is unacceptable to be so selfish, and I will not permit it."

Riley chuckled again, more to himself than anything else.

"I pity your single-sightedness though your resolve is admirable."

He raised his right hand, glowing bright blue with aura.

"The greater world is such a different thing to what you perceive it to be. Your blow was fatal, I will die and yet... yet perhaps I see more clearly."

Now Riley sat up. Nevermind the blood. He reached for his hat that had fallen to the side and placed it on his head. Lucario was about to rush forward but Riley raised his hand to indicate that he should go no further.

"Believe what you must. My words will do no difference. I know this much already. But I feel pity for you, if only because I know such."

He was prepared to wipe out everything, yet the knowledge that he had killed a single person turned Cyrus's stomach. All in the name of the new world, he told himself.

"...You are attuned to the power of the very universe itself and still you deny what must be done." His faith, though, was something that could never waver. "You claim to pity me though it is counterproductive to salvation."
