Marth | Fire Emblem 3 | 6 2 aestheticemblem August 19 2011, 07:58:26 UTC
It was strangely fitting. Marth had likely known from the very beginning of things that in his position, those in his status were more probable to fall to polearms, lances, halberds, axes, broadswords, or even a well thrusted shield in hopes of a parry ( ... )

Not a god, but a man who dreamed of being a god. He had been cast into the fighting the mysterious force when it had come from nowhere and dominated Sinnoh. His followers were destroyed as troublemakers, the executions of his commanders broadcast for all to see.

And in that moment, something had changed in Cyrus. Previously a pacifist (although his adherence to that belief had been debatable), he came to embrace war, destruction, death, and to slaughter those foes without mercy, without concience, without regret.

Those who fought with him escaped his wrath, although he had made it clear that he had no care for them. And he never seemed to, existing only to destroy those who had taken the universe from him.

The closest he came was a grudging respect, and Marth was one of those he saw as worthy of it. To come across Marth in that condition, leaning over his shield and decidedly wounded, forced a rare hand extended in comeradery. "You will not fall here," he told the young prince. "Come with me."

Marth took many moments to stare at Cyrus. His... saviour, of sorts? He had no issues expressing his gratitude that anyone would come lend him a hand. Really. He didn't. Sure, there might have been a bit of a blow to the pride, but that hardly meant anything when death was staring him in the blue eyes.

He looked up to Cyrus and gratefully took his hand, trying to pull himself to his feet. "Thank you," he spoke carefully around a cough. "Where are we standing? Will we win...?"

Or is this a pointless battle?

"I learned long ago not to ever consider victory a sure thing," Cyrus told him. "Before my dreams were swept away by reality...but no matter. It appears, at this time, as if we will triumph, but another battle will always await us..."

The older man took hold of Marth, wrapping an arm around his back to support him. "Your wounds are severe. Do you believe them to be fatal?"

Were his wounds fatal? Marth didn't even have to look to know the answer to that. Even Akaneia's finest couldn't have fully healed him. Already he'd lost too much blood and unless someone wanted to take his soul in place of fully healing his body, he would go the way as so many soldiers before him had. Saying this, however, was something entirely different from thinking it. Saying it meant confirming it. Confirming it could be contrived as having given up hope.

He allowed Cyrus to help him, understanding well enough that even if he hadn't wanted the other man to, Marth couldn't have done anything anyway. He watched Cyrus for a moment, silently admiring his strength physically and mentally to handle the situation with such unrivalled composition.

"I will do all I can with what I have and what I am," he replied, as though that perfectly answered Cyrus's question - even knowing that it did nothing of the sort.

Yet somehow Cyrus seemed to understand what he meant. "I see. So you are lost. A pity." There was no sympathy at all in the man's voice. "I must not let them see you die. They must fight on."

Marth almost said something, but. It seemed somewhat pointless. Some people just didn't understand and Cyrus couldn't be fully faulted for being uninformed or inexperienced. Half of the fault lied with the person and the other half lied with the one above the person.

If you had information, you were required to share it with your people. How you chose to was really left up to you, but it was still a necessity.

"Yes. This is likely for the best, " he agreed. "I will trust you to help me to somewhere appropriate."

"Very well." His arm tightened around Marth as they headed for the forest. The fighting was thin there, and they faced no resistance. "...those who admire you...I will keep them away, lest morale fall. They are driven by emotion..."

He said no more, having been fully open with his views on the toxin that was emotion. All who served alongside him would know what he would say.

Finally they came across a bright clearing, an ideal place that students had once used for picnics and other less savory getaways.

Marth shook his head slowly, as if to disagree, but once again, he very well knew there was no point. Eventually the others would turn and notice he was missing and likely would put the pieces together. He'd cross that bridge when they got to it. But if he died, then there was no bridge to cross.

He looked around as Cyrus helped him along. "Thank you. You have my gratitude."

If not his understanding.

Cyrus stood for a moment before helping Marth to the ground. Kneeling down, he told him "I will tell them of your fate after the battle. For now, they must fight at full strength. They cannot be hindered. But to hear later...yes, that will spur them on."

He remained still for a bit, head bowed and eyes closed. "...We must triumph, in the end. There is no other option."

Triumph. Yes. They had to triumph.

He eyed Cyrus for a few moments as he grew as comfortable as he was going to get. "...I understand. I thank you again for your assistance."

And he would have much preferred to have been left on his own to die. It would have been odd to have someone watch him pass from this world onto the next.

Cyrus watched him for a moment before turning without a word. Someone had to destroy those demons once and for all, and the need to do so pounded within him with every heartbeat.

"Best of luck to you," Marth gave a partial salute, or as close to one as he could give. "I wish you the very best of luck."

"Luck has nothing to do with it, your highness."

Cyrus was some ways away, but halted in case Marth had anything further to say.

And he didn't. For he had no intentions of spending his last few moments arguing. No. He'd rather leave something behind for Midna, which was precisely what people would find when they found him.

After waiting thirty seconds exactly, Cyrus pressed on. There was no point waiting, especially when the younger man may have already died.

He would be a powerful symbol for the weary battalion to fight under, but his use as a mortal man was over. Cyrus would ensure further victory without him.
