What to say about my first week back at York?
We'll take it day by day, I suppose:
Monday
Woke up early afternoon and got ready. Trish and I drove up in her rental car and hauled my
bags upon
bags upon
bags to room 211-B. Pond Road Residence is the most gorgeous place I've ever lived. I moved in with my bff Allison Proudfoot (a hobbit), who wasn't here the entire first day after I moved in. Trish decided we should go looking for an open grocery store, which on labour day was quite futile. The Superstore, the No Frills (eww) and the Dominion were all closed, so instead I bought a box of s'more granolla bars and a bulk pack of raspberry flavored water to survive on until I was to go grocery shopping. Trisha left me at Pond to unpack and decorate. I only got as far as unpacking before Kayla, another Toronto bff, showed up. We went to another Shoppers up Steeles so I could buy some makeup and such, before going over to our friend Emma's house in York University's village. Emma was there with her girlfriend and one of my best friends, Jen, and Emma's design friends Peter and Andrea. We all had pizza and sat around talking for hours until I started to fall asleep, which is when we all took off. Kayla and I came back to my room and played Guitar Hero II for a bit and had some drinks before I went to bed for my first night in Pond.
Tuesday
Due to the discomfort from my rock hard res bed I didn't sleep very much, so I was awake when Ally finally got here. She'd been staying with at her boyfriend Graham's (henceforth known as "Graham Cracker", or simply "Cracker") for the night. We jumped and screamed and danced around, then decided after Ally did a bit of unpacking to go grocery shopping at the Super-Walmart. We did so, buying far too much (including a microwave, OI!) and because we had so much I decided to splurge on a taxi home. We unpacked our groceries and all our kitchen stuff and continued unpacking (which for me consisted of hanging all my posters, pictures and various wall fixtures around my room). We had a house meeting that evening which was fun and such. Our don, Jeannie, seems really nice. Ally had to go to skating so Kayla and I played Guitar Hero II some more, I think? Those first few days are such a blur.
Wednesday
Ugh, I'm making this sound so mechanical and so much less interesting than it actually was. Had my first class Wednesday! It's Intro to costuming. I wanted to take a costuming design course if I have to stay at York in later years, so I have to take a bunch of prerequisites. I'm the only guy in the classes (which makes me endlessly happy) and the teacher seems amazing. She was like, wardrobe head on the Mirvish productions of The Producers, Hairspray, the Lion King and Mamma Mia!, so I know she'll be able to teach even someone as hopeless as me how to use a sewing machine. After class I came back and finished decorating my
room (FINALLY!). All finished it looks a little bit like
this. Here's my
desk, my
performance/entertainment/art wall, my favorite part of my room; my
pictures walls (almost 102 pictures up there),
more posters and such, and finally my
gay closet (get it, closet? gay? coming out... whatever, I thought it was clever...) I also moved the furniture around a little bit so I can do pilates on the floor at night. Kayla came over and we decided to go shopping to pick up some forgotten groceries, alcohol and to do a bit of birthday shopping.
Mom originally gave me a hundred and sixty dollars or something for my birthday, and then I got fifty from my grandmother. Of course a lot of this went into grocery shopping, which is mega lame but a boy's got to eat. In the end though I did buy myself plenty for my birthday. I got some eyeliner, powder foundation stuff, and a dumpy little straightener from Shoppers (so I'm totally
faggin' it up at York now). During our shopping trip we went to Ardenes. I love having a girl to go shopping with because it means I can go to all the girl stores. The girl in Ardenes, however, blatantly followed us around the store the entire time, but after awhile she started to be helpful and point out stuff and sales. She comes up to me and she's like, "I see you're wearing black nail polish. We have a sale over here. Two for five dollars." I was like "SWEET!" and proceeded to fill my basket. I ended up buying two thingies of really good black nail polish, two belts, a few wristlets and a couple of hand warmer thingies. Finally I bought the original Broadway cast recording of RENT, which made me so happy! Two discs of RENT for $9.00! Sex!
Thursday
Was awoken at 9 in the morning but Computer Customer Service people, so I sat at my computer, naked and wrapped in a blanket while an Indian girl walked me through stuff I'd already tried. See, my ResNet didn't work all week, driving me insane. Oddly enough as soon as I hung up my ResNet suddenly worked, which made me so happy. Because of being woken up I was all in a fluster about time, so I accidentally arrived at my very playwrighting class (the program I'm specializing in) half an hour early. So I burst in all fagged up into a meeting of older theatre officials at York. I go, "This isn't playwrighting, is it?" And they were like, "No... no it's not..." So that was a bit embarassing. But within the half an hour I made a new friend!
Playwrighting seems awesome. The teacher, Judith, is so observant and the work we're going to be doing seems so creative and fun. I can't wait. I'll talk more about it as it happens.
Directly afterwards I had the most boring class ever with one of the best teachers. It's called "Ideas of Theatre" and it's so much reading and writing, but it's mandatory for creative writing, theatre studies and playwrighting students. Ugh, and the teacher, Prof. Fothergill, is one of the sweetest old men ever. I really hope the future classes are going to be more interesting.
Friday
I'm just rushing through the days now. Friday I actually didn't do too much. Ally was at Graham Cracker's and Kayla had gone home for the weekend, and I have no classes Friday so I slept in a bit, then walked to Scotiabank down Keele to get some American money changed and deposit some money so I can pay my student account. I basically sat around all afternoon and evening doing a bit of work and chatting on MSN. After sitting around all evening (broken only by an emergency house meeting about a sexual assault on campus... ugh...) Carly and her cousin came over. We drank wine, ate brownies and nachos and watched Eurotrip and then Carly sang me happy birthday at 12:15.
There, that brings up up to date. I woke up a little while ago and am putting off showering as long as possible. I want to wait until as close to when we go out so I'll still seem fresh and my hair won't curl. Whatever, I'll just use tons and tons of hairspray. Jen, Ally, Olivia and I are going to a gay bar downtown called "Crews and Tango". Ally's going to be the only straight person, so I hope she gets hit on.
Bonne fete a moi!
