Elizabeth tilted her head back, honey hair tumbling over her back. Behind her, in the dark and silent room, Will slept. So peaceful, an angel with moonlight slashing down to touch him on a forge scarred hand.
He was not soft. He was slim and strong and hard as a man should be. Her face turned outwards, to look upon the stars. And what should she see but a falling one! Her lips part gently as she watched it streak closer and closer. She blinked when the splash hit. It hit the bay?
Without a thought to slumbering Will, only grabbing a dress to pull over her nightgown so she was presentable, she rushed down the narrow stairs. Out into the street, she joined the small late night crowd that heard the explosion.
The street lit up with some unholy fire, a growling as if the Devil himself had woken echoed along buildings of wood and stone. Unnerved, Elizabeth stood to watch as many fled in panic.
Some sort of craft came along, riding the air like a ship does water. At it's helm... She stared openly, lips parted agape. A stately young woman, of an age to her, wearing unusual clothing. The craft halted, shining as if it were made of silver entirely. Blinking back her awe, she looked up.
The girl looked back at her. She spoke in some strange lilting language. Perhaps it was the far eastern language that Jack had spouted once upon a time. It was hard for Elizabeth to say. She was, oddly, more fascinated by the lips the words came from.
A golden man repeated the woman's words.
"Salutations. We have had a slight accident and require the use of your communications aparatus. If you have one."
Elizabeth blinked and replied quickly, "Communications? Sir... what interesting armor you have... Sir... we can send a ship to whatever port your message needs to arrive, however... we have no ship that can reach the stars."
Deductive girl that she was, she had already put together the facts. And was staring at the Stargirl more openly than even before. There was a sadness, a softness around the Stargirl's eyes, that Elizabeth could relate to.
Wondering what it would be like to touch that softness, she reached up and smiled. "I am Elizabeth."
The girl reached down to take her hand in a firm grip. Not sure and rough, like Will's. Soft, yet still strong. She replied simply, glancing at the golden man for translation, "Padme."
Padme did not let go right away, her fingers warm, slightly damp from salt water, her odd maroon dress festooned with glistening droplets. Enchanted, Elizabeth was able to reply, "A pleasure, Padme."
Certainly she had images of bringing Padme to meet Will, of spending time with her shopping, gossiping, picnicing. But instead of indulging in foolishness, she turned to look as a good gathering of the British garrison was surrounding them.
She let go of Padme's hand, finally, to close the distance between the world she knew and the new one that just arrived at her doorstep.
