Basics
Full name: Sarah Rose Heartman
Nicknames: None
Gender: Female
Age: 30
Date of Birth: April 14, 1977
Birthplace: Warwick, Rhode Island
Current Location: Dable, Massachusetts. Sarah was born and raised in Rhode Island. Shortly after her mother died, she up and moved to get away from the memories. She moved to Dable because it seemed secluded, and now feels trapped there.
Nationality: American (½ Hungarian, ¼ Irish, ¼ English)
Physical Appearance: Sarah has pale skin and dark hair. One could call her pasty. She dresses in loose, comfortable clothes. Her eyes are often frantic and searching, and she doesn’t always take care of her hair. When she doesn’t simply leave it down, she pulls it up into a loose bun just to get it out of her face. Sarah is on the thin side, only because she doesn’t always eat. Willowly describes her well. Her posture gives away that she is rather skittish.
Occupation: Sarah is currently between jobs. She is trying to secure a job as a librarian, but her lack of experience is working against her.
Skills/Talents: Though she didn’t finish college, Sarah is pretty book-smart. She loves to read, and when she can, she takes safe haven in the public library. She knows French, Spanish, and German. She was also studying Arabic and Portuguese, but never finished her studies. Now she tries to keep them in her head at the library, but having no one to chat with in those languages, they are all starting to slip. When she was in college, she was studying international studies, and planning to be an interpreter.
Sarah is also a talented singer. Her mother was a voice teacher, and so Sarah learned to sing by sitting close by during her mother’s house lessons. Anymore, her voice is a bit rusty. She doesn’t sing often, but when she is lonely or scared, she will sing quietly to comfort herself. She can also play the piano, but she’s no prodigy. She knows the notes, but never learned to read music. Sometimes she sketches, but she hates her sketches, and while they’re not bad, they’re not great, either.
Personality
Likes: Books, languages, cultures. Sarah is (or used to be) obsessed with the idea of traveling and exploring. She loves to read, and often reads romance novels as a form of escapism.
Dislikes: Being jobless, small animals (squirrels, chipmunks, etc), public transportation, living in a small port town (because everyone knows who she is, and frankly, it’s boring).
Strengths: Organization, she has a very strong memory.
Weaknesses/Flaws: She gets very caught up in the things that happen to her, and tends to dwell. Some have said she is not able to move on from the past. She falls into states of depression, and has trouble keeping a job.
Secrets (if applicable): She was engaged to be married once, but was jilted. She waited three whole years for him to come back, but he never did. She finally went looking for him, and found out he’d married someone else.
Sexual Orientation: Straight.
Back-story and Background
Parents: Deceased (Veronica and Lyle Heartman)
Siblings: None
Backstory
Though her father was distant and an alcoholic, Sarah had a good relationship with her mother. They lived a mediocre lifestyle in Warwick, Rhode Island. Sarah excelled in her studies, and skipped the second grade, therefore graduating a year early. She lived a bit of a sheltered life, as her mother was very protective. Her mother was a music and voice teacher, but also worked at the local grocery market. Sarah’s father worked at a factory. He tended to blow their money on booze, and sometimes hit her mother. But Sarah’s mother didn’t believe in divorce, so stayed with him until he died. He died when Sarah was fifteen, because of complications to his liver.
After Lyle died, Sarah and her mother moved not far, to Providence’s lower districts, where they could find cheaper housing. Unfortunately, business was not going well for Veronica’s music interests, so she was having to take on extra time at the super market. Sarah got her first job at sixteen, at the local Dunkin’ Donuts, which she could walk to. Three months later, she switched locations because she didn’t like the manager. Now she had to walk further, but didn’t mind. Only two months after working in this location, Sarah quit, and got a job at a more upbeat and privately owned coffee shop, but that job only lasted about five months. Sarah was finding that she hated her jobs, and just couldn’t settle for being so unhappy.
She kept bouncing from job to job, and doing well in her studies. She graduated at seventeen, and went to a local community college. When she was nineteen, her mother was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer. She died within three months. Sarah watched her mother die a very fast, but very painful death, and therefore dropped out of college. Devastated, Sarah took what she could and disappeared.
She uprooted to a small island not far from Warwick, called Dable, which was actually located in Massachusetts. She lived in a local, cheap motel 66 for a few weeks until she could find an apartment that she could barely afford. Sarah had a hard time finding a new job, but eventually settled for working at a bookstore, which she adored. It was the longest job she ever held, and she kept at it for four years.
When she was 23, Sarah met Zach. Zach paid her attention like no one ever had before. He was a businessman from New York, investing in real estate on the island. Zach romanced her for a bit, but was wary of her melancholy nature. He took her on trips to New York City, and even funded her to find a better apartment. After a year of flirting with her, he proposed marriage. Sarah was elated, and was making plans to move to NYC with him. She quit her job at the bookstore, probably too early, and leaving them in a bad spot. But Sarah didn’t care… she was too excited about planning her wedding. One weekend Zach went away on a business trip. He never came back. After a few months, when her money was running out, she got another job, this time at a cafeteria (she was afraid to ask for her job back at the bookstore). She was barely scraping buy on the rent in the new apartment Zach had found for her. Finally, after three years, she had saved enough to make a week-long trip to New York City. She had to do some searching, but finally found Zach… only he had already been married.
Since then, Sarah has had serious commitment problems. She has not found anyone else that could make her feel the way Zach did. Her problems with work got worse. She hated working at the cafeteria, and eventually got fired for coming to work later and later. She spends a lot of time at the pier, looking out to the ocean, and sketching with charcoal, though she has a tendency to throw her sketches into the ocean, because she hates them.
When she’s not at the pier or job-hunting, Sarah spends her time at the public library, reading. She finds it’s a great escape from everyone else, and her current situation. She has applied for a job as a librarian, but they have issues because of her job history and lack of library-related experience (though Sarah insists that a bookstore is pretty much the same).
