F-list, pls help!

I'm looking to expand fandoms. Currently, I only play in Star Trek (Reboot & TNG), but it's not fulfilling all of my fanfic reading needs, as I'm not a fan of Jim Kirk. I can read up to 500 pages of fanfic a week, if I could find the stories.

PLS SEND SUGGESTIONS! Off the bat, Inception, Glee, and Gossip Girl are no-gos. Otherwise, point me to ( Read more... )

What about old school fandoms, like Due South or The Sentinel? Other big fandoms that I've enjoyed at one point or another: Supernatural, Harry Potter, Merlin, Stargate Atlantis, and Doctor who. There's also bandom, if you like RPS at all.

Sherlock is my current fave which gives a lot of options, depending on which canon you like best.

If any of those sound good to you, I can give you some starter recs. I don't know how much you care about knowing the canon before you start reading.

I'm thinking that knowing a bit of the fandom/story lines probably help, heck just knowing the show probably helps (I've never heard of Due South, Sentinel, or Stargate Atlantis; yay for wiki).

Do you have some good non-Sam stuff from Supernatural or Harry Potter stuff (no Harry or Hermoine)? Also, any Jeffrey Dean Morgan RPS? No clue, but he's super sexy to me.

Wow, I'm surprised you've never heard of some of those! The Sentinel is probably impossible to find, unless you torrent it. I know the dvds were never released. DS and SGA should be easy finds, if you have any interest in watching them. The only DS season I personally care about is the last one, because they change who the main character is partnered with from someone I'm not attracted to to someone I am.

Unfortunately, I can't rec a lot of non Sam stuff as he's my favorite. Same with non Harry. >D I start all my fic searches at archiveofourown, because you can sort by tag for pairings and characters. Starandrea has some really long, really enjoyable spn fic that's mostly Dean/Cas with Sam/Gabriel in the background depending on which fic it is.

For HP recs, maybe try painless-j on insanejournal. She does a ton of recs and a lot of her rec lists are sorted by pairing so you can avoid the ones you don't like.

Hopefully that will help get you started but let me know if you want more details/links.

Could you point me to the Dean/Castiel? It's funny how I've seen a grand total of 1 SPN episode, but I know all about the show due to LJ/fandom.

And thanks much for pointing me to painless-j. Very nice list.

If you'll read Sherlock Holmes the orginal book canon, everything by Katie Forsythe is excellent, http://katieforsythe.livejournal.com/. The stories in the Love universe are particuarly good.

Wow I haven't read the original books, but I'll probably check out the stories anyway. I randomly found some good Nancy Drew/Ned Nickerson fic last year; the smex was hot, so I kepr reading, even though I've never read Nancy Drew canon!

So read anything by ndnickerson. I think you have to go there for the good, uncensored, non f-locked stuff: http://www.ivory-charmed.com/ulstergirl/index.html

Also, there's evidently an entire Nancy Drew lj community, but I can't guarantee the goodness there: http://community.livejournal.com/nancydrewfic/

I totally second both The Sentinel and Due South. I just got into Due South myself and it's amazing. You can get the entire series for like $30 which isn't bad. Sadly for The Sentinel only the first season for released on DVD (out of four), but I know a site where you can download all of it (each episode separately) if you're interested.

If you like angst and h/c, Torchwood is a great one. Also it has a canon gay couple with gives it bonus points. ;)

Hmm other than that, most of my fandoms tend to be small sadly.

ETA: Star Trek DS9 is a good one too.

Thanks for this.

I'd like to know more about your small fandoms, because I know all about playing in small or non-existent ones: American Dreams, Everwood, Friday Night Lights (esp. post season 1)?

Are there any specific genres that you're interested in, or are you game for anything?

I tend not to be a fan of sci-fi, so that's out. Anything where I'd have to watch 3 seasons of episodes just to "get it" is out (a.k.a. no Lost or Grey's Anatomy, but surprisingly, NCIS or Law & Order are exempt). Otherwise, I'm game. Heck, someone else turned me on to American Idol RPF and I've been gobbling up David Cook/David Archuleta fic for the past week!
