Narrative:
I raced at Greenbelt 3 times last season when I was working my way out of category 5, and still had one punch left on my race pass. Since Erica had plans for the evening, I loaded my race bike onto the car, and headed out from work over to Greenbelt for my last road bike race of the year.
I was hoping to better my time on the KOM section of the race, since I won the KOM jersey in the C race last year, and then planned to race around and see what I could make happen. Following my normal routine, I broke from the field on the first lap to race up the KOM section, and then held that lead for a lap before being sucked back into the field. I stayed with the field for several laps catching my breath from the KOM effort, and watched to see what the other racers were doing. After about 15 minutes of racing, a group of 5 tried to breakaway, and I led the field to chase them back down. This happened twice, the second time I let the group set the catch pace, and then moved up and ended up leaving the field in a two man breakaway that I didn't even realize was happening. The two of us rode almost the rest of the race off the front, and then got sucked back in with two laps to go. I tucked into the back of the field for a lap, and then worked my way into a position to contest the field sprint finish.
A nice evening.
