I posted these pictures on facebook but almost forgot to post them here. I gotta say... I'm thinking about switching my picture posts over to somewhere else. I'm gonna give my real website an overhaul soon with the help of my pal Karen Martinez and it might make sense to consolidate a bit... Livejournal has been a good long run and I've always stuck with it because of the friends page/community aspect of it but now that's pretty much dead and LJ is swarming with weirdo spam and lots of ads. It might be time to let it go, after 10 years! I kind of feel too spread out around the internet these days anyway.

Here's my second week in Philly. It was a really good week full of new friends that made me feel really welcome here.

PICTURE POST: second week in philly! lots of group hang outs! drawing with friends, at the park, soccer, softball, potlucks, housewarming parties, phew.

Trying out my new crossfit gym, which I haven't officially started yet because of money stuff, but will start in two weeks! It's about a quarter of the size of my box in Chicago but I knew I was spoiled with a huge crossfit gym there (though this one does seem small even by Crossfit box standards). Everyone there was super welcoming and got such a good community vibe even in my first day. Pretty stoked to get started again. It's been so long since I've regularly worked out =0( Totally feeling it too.

the same day, karen and todd came to west philly for a hangout. we had planned to go to pawn shops/thrift stores to look for record players but once they got to west philly we realized there weren't really any in west worth going to. so we just took rover to the park! todd is rover's new best friend.

this is clark park, the big hangout park in west philly. lots of dogs, lots of punks, lots of hippies with bongo drums.

we ran into our buddies max and grace with their old engish sheep dog puppy, sprocket!

i'm so stoked that rover can just easily hang out with other dogs now. when i first got rover he was sort of a nightmare when it came to that. he wanted to attack every other dog. it was really stressful. now he's so chill and friendly!

vicious rover with grass on his nose

coffee at satellite afterward.

the next day i did laundry at a laundromat for the first time in a year and a half. i forgot that in a weird way i sort of like having to go to the laundromat. it's a good time to just sit and draw and listen to music in head phones and people watch.

grindcore house is an all vegan coffeeshop in south philly. it's a good place to go if you wanna socialize but don't wanna have to try to organize a hangout. inevitably, there will be at least one other person there you know, and on days like this one, there might be 6 or 7 people there you know... and throughout the day, 5 more might show up.

that's karen, a new partner in crime. karen rules! we have a lot of mutual friends from DC, she's been supporting herself as a freelance graphic designer, and we like a lot of the same music. she's really good for all the time hang outs because she's pretty much down for whatever.

cody, nick lee, and kettner. all new buddies.

nick and cody about to head over to whole foods for more hangin out.

cody wrote me a letter last year before a philly visit once that said that everyone hangs out at whole foods. and i was thinking 'huh?' but now i get it. it's just a place with outdoor tables for good people watching and loitering. our whole foods in chicago wasn't on a busy people watching street and didn't have outdoor tables. amy is in purple. she does occupational therapy with kids at schools. she also rides her bike a lot!

nick lee, todd and carol. carol is a really good drummer in a good pop punk band:

that night i went with cody to check out west philly softball on wednesday nights. it was pretty fun. a handful of people play, and a lot more people just watch, mostly punks.

everyone i talked to was really nice

the next house project we're tackling is our front yard. it's actually pretty big but wa filled with this enormous hedge!

here's ryan showing me how to use the electric saw so i could chop it out. haha.

last thursday we had our housewarming party and birthday party for my roommate ryan. he just turned 33.

todd loving rover, as usual. melanie is on the left. and peter is straight ahead.

it was a potluck with a lot of good food. the gal in the party dress is sarah, my other roommate! we met through zine stuff at the portland zine symposium. she's a volunteer at the wooden shoe which is the independent book/zine store here.

karen, nick lee, cody and todd.

rover with a big, hopeful smile. sorry dude.

someone on my silly formspring recently asked for pictures of the rest of our house. a lot of the rooms still aren't really put together because it's a work in progress, but you can see a lot more of it in these photos.

about to cut ryan's birthday cake! ryan and sarah are partners.

on friday i took the el for the first time to go meet karen in her neighborhood, which is northern liberties. most of the people we know/are friends with live in south or west philly. it was cool to explore a different neighborhood.

torn up shoes. these are my favorite shoes and i've worn them into the ground. pretty bummed! all my shoes die at the same time.

karen took me to a good coffeeshop called one shot. it was really big and cozy. i like it a lot. i need to head up that way more often to draw. i like to switch up my coffeeshop scenery from time to time because i'm in them so often working on drawing stuff.

at karen's place.

this was the re-do for our thrift/pawn shop day. we hit a about ten different places in northern liberties and fishtown. we were looking pretty much exclusively for record players and weird glass containers to make terrariums out of. i also found half a bolt of linen, which i turned into curtains already! we were shopping at this thrift store and i looked down and realized a rogue croc had made it's way into our cart. for some reason it was really really funny.

ms. martinez leading the way

we went into this huge architectural antique store just for fun (everything cost thousands of dollars). i spotted this really awesome antique espresso machine! as a coffee nerd this was really cool to me.

straight out of freshman color photo bfa class!

as a workout nerd, this antique row machine was super cool.

we stopped by grindcore for food/coffee and of course, kettner was there drawing comics with his roommate monica. monica is trying to jumpstart a handmade book business. she's brainstorming names/branding stuff.

on to a community plant sale in west philly

my day's haul: a weird wooden bottle, several cool glass containers, three plants, half a bolt of linen, and a weird little ship to add to my collection of boat themed stuff in my room

a terrarium that karen made me as a housewarming gift! super cute.

curtain production taking over my bedroom. i still don't have a little studio set up, but that's on the list for this upcoming week.

i didn't have enough linen for all four curtains, so i used some burlap from old curtains i had in my last bedroom and ended up with enough fabric! they're way more interesting this way anyway.

the wooden bottle and the ship

on the weekend, there was a craft fair called crafty balboa in south philly. karen interns for this dude shariff who does woodcut stuff. so i went down to check out the booth and hang a bit. on the left is peter, karen's partner. he does art web development stuff. shariff was super funny.

then we went to blackbird and ate too much vegan pizza

later on i saw dom's band, p-dogs, play at the hong kong garden, a house/warehouse show space in fishtown area.

cody and carol's band, rowsdower, also played

hung out with jim, met gabby, and hung out with max. all cool philly folks. i met jim when he toured with self-conscious and came through chicago. i've known max a few years from zine stuff and the dc area punk scene. max also works at a graphic design place and just got karen a job there.

white wires were really awesome.

walnut st. bridge home at 1am.

post-show pizza at eds pizza shop. this was hanging in the pizza shop, featuring richardnj, a pal from chicago. it made me laugh a good amount.

dom and will in eds

tons of drawing! i have 6 pages done on a new project i'm working on, and did a new two page if you make it comic this week too!

on sundays, a bunch of folks play soccer at the park. i went to check it out and see how casual it was, and to just watch and draw

seems like fun, everyone looked good though! i'd have to learn a bit about soccer before trying to keep up

at a potluck at shannon and jon's place. that's jordan, he does crossfit at the gym i'm about to start going to! stoked to have a punk crossfit friend still.

that's kev. he's the brains behind soccer sundays.
