Hey
I finished the first big project.
4 vests
1 Victorian corset
1 chemise
1Ren-style bodice in black dupoini silk with rounded taps
1 Full Regency style dress
all in all a big project
The good- oh boy did I learn a lot
A better way to make side laced bodice/dresses.
Working with lace can actually be fun if you get the right lace.
That I can but together a Ren bodice in two days if I have all the materials on hand, this is a good thing to know.
Silk dupoini is my third favorite fabric right behind cotton and linen.
Fabric stores are my church.
When people ask to be involved in every step of the creation of something, make sure they KNOW what that means.
The men involved in weddings become bystanders when it comes to anything dress related. I already knew this, but only from my own wedding. This time I got to see in from the outside. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is a true thing.
The bad- Weddings in general, people are never pleasant. At best they are tolerant and at worst they are rude and threatening. You will have to remind them they chose you for a reason, and if they are not happy with your work then they can go elsewhere.
The ugly- Do not, under any circumstances let the bride have more then one friend (or any if that is at all possible) at the fittings. Each person has his or her own take on what said dress should look like. The bride will probably be too polite to say anything or too nervous; she hired you for a reason, because you know what you are doing. The bride will probably bring the most out-spoken friend because said friend will ask (insist) on coming with the premise of making sure she is getting the best for her money. This may or may not be true. I believe the reason the friend is coming is to try and bully the seamstress/dressmaker in to doing something for free because of some perceived fault in the dress or the construction of the dress. The only time a friend of the bride gets to tell you how things will be is if she/he is also a seamstress/dressmaker. Otherwise she is not allowed to tell you how anything should be.
It was fun, hard work, and extremely changeling (which I like)
and I am continuing to sew, so that should say it all.
