A jail superintendent who till recently was in charge of Jammu’s high-security Kot Bhalwal prison was arrested today for alleged involvement in a conspiracy to kill a man who had taken on the accused behind the high-profile murder of his nephew.
Kot Bhalwal houses several dreaded Pakistani and Afghan militants. Mirza Saleem Beig, who is now Superintendent of Udhampur District Jail, was arrested at Jammu railway station as he arrived from Delhi.
DIG, Jammu-Kathua range, Farooq Khan said they believe the conspiracy to kill Sudershan Wazir, who was actively pursuing the case of his nephew Amandeep Singh’s murder, was hatched in Beig’s presence inside Kot Bhalwal jail. Even money was paid to the contract killers inside the prison, said the DIG.
He said they came to know of Beig’s involvement following the arrest of Sunny Baba, a notorious criminal who was held from near Jhajjar Kotli last week. Sunny is a member of a criminal gang that had allegedly been hired by the main accused in the Amandeep murder case, Naggar Singh, to kill Wazir.
Police believe Beig monitored the movement of the local contract killers, giving them instructions from inside the jail when one of them, Rakesh Kumar Giri, was killed and his accomplice Yudhvir Singh injured in an encounter on the outskirts of Jammu city on November 21 last year. Sunny was reportedly with them at the time but escaped.
The son of former legislator Dipinder Kour, Amandeep had been allegedly shot by Jatinder Singh alias Raja and Royal Singh in August 2009.
