I'm watching Jilly-Anne's graduation ceremony and there are a lot of funny looking people in robes - one old guy has beautiful orange robes - and people holding the most boring speeches I have ever heard in my entire life. But maybe I can spot Jilly-Anne for a second, and that'd be worth all the "intelligence, judgement, passion for family, community and golf blah blah McGill family blah blah Robert Whoever talk"
Oh, this morning I had the most strange phone conversation. My favourite Ohio/Brooklyn band "The National" are playing in some venue called Club Voltaire in Frankfurt tonight. Thought I call them to make sure this gig will happen, and I got a girl on the phone who was most strange:
Her: Hello
Me: Hi, umm, I was checking your website and there's not anything on for tonight. Can you confirm that there's The National playing tonight.
Her: Are you the guy who sent me an email this morning
Me: Umm, no?
Her: OK, well I know there was something planned for tonight, but I'm not sure if it'll happen
Me: What does that mean?
Her: I haven't heard anything in the past three weeks
Me: The gig is still listed on the band's website
Her: Oh, I guess it will happen then. Just show up and see for yourself.
Me: That's a bit odd, isn't it? Why don't you know if you have a gig in your club this evening?
Her: [laughs] Well, they are not playing in the club. They might play in the pub downstairs, though.
Me: Oh?
Her: You know, we are a political club, and the band didn't really match our program
Me: Yeah, these are sad men singing sad songs
Her: Yup, this doesn't fit in here. Well, the band asked us if they could play here, so we let them
Me: They don't have a promoter? I mean, they are from America and...
Her: No, I remember someone called and said they wanted to play a gig in Frankfurt and had no place to play. So we will let them play in the pub. And I guess they ask for some entrance fee, which will go entirely to the band. But I don't know...
Me: Alright *grins* - sounds like fun, see you tonight
Her: I am sitting in the first floor, you know.
Me: You might consider taking a break
Her: Ok, will do *laughs*
