Character Info
Series/Fandom: Persona 3
Character's Name: Akihiko Sanada
Character's Sex: Male
Character's Age: 18
Canon point: After the original game, but before “The Answer” epilogue from the director’s cut.
Abilities: Being Gekkoukan High’s resident boxing champion (at least up until his recent graduation), Akihiko is always in top physical condition and is quite capable of handling himself in hand-to-hand combat. Far more noteworthy, however, is his ability to summon a Persona, the manifestation of one’s inner self, a mask worn to battle life’s hardships. His initial Persona was
Polydeuces; however, his Persona, like those of his comrades, eventually transformed and became
Caesar, his current and final Persona.
Through Caesar, Akihiko is granted a number of physical attacks that are stronger than those he could deliver on his own (though he’s no slouch when it comes to melee combat), as well as lightning (Zio) magic. He also has the ability to heal himself or a single ally. He must make use of an evoker each time he summons his Persona for any attack or spell, which, to the untrained eye, appears to be nothing more than a handgun. He wears his evoker in a holster attached to his belt at all times.
Background:
“Okay, everything’s going according to plan.” Appearance:
[Full Body] Personality: Though he is viewed by many as aloof and playing the part of the “cool upperclassman,” Akihiko’s isolationist attitude is not born out of any kind of conceit. While solitary in his way, Akihiko is simply a private person who prizes his personal space, quiet and well-mannered. He has had great difficulty coming to terms with his past, particularly the death of his younger sister, Miki, for which he feels responsible. As a result, he has trouble relating to the people around him on a personal level and is nervous about letting people get too close to him. While not at all unfriendly, he is shy in many social situations and has some trouble articulating himself when put on the spot. Longtime friends and classmates Mitsuru and Shinjiro have both seemed to circumvent his social issues and know him well, and the two of them are the people he feels most comfortable confiding in. He is at ease around the other members of SEES, as well, though he is not quite as open with the group as a whole.
Akihiko doesn’t much care for his popularity, often citing the flock of girls that follow him between classes and all over campus as annoying. Though he is often heralded as Gekkoukan’s boxing champion, he didn’t take up the sport to aid his reputation and usually pays little attentions to the praise from his fans, though he is almost always polite to them when approached. His success as a boxer comes from his obsession with training himself to become stronger, the result of a vow he made after the death of his sister, deciding he would never fail anyone else the way he had failed Miki. He is very focused on his training and revels in the fight, having developed a taste for combat over the years.
Mitsuru often voices her disapproval of this behavior, thinking he treats their work as a game, but even though he’s come to love fighting, he feels that being a Persona user presents one with a great responsibility. Akihiko feels that power is not something to be wasted, and that the power of Persona is best put to use protecting those who can’t protect themselves against the Shadows. If he gets to punch in his share of demon-faces along the way, that’s fine with him. He tends to use fighting as a way to vent his frustrations, as well, a crutch he leaned on often before Shinji was shot, when he was still unsure of how to handle confrontation and how to come to terms with his past mistakes. Since Shinji’s death, he’s promised his friend that he would face his problems head-on going forward, instead of ignoring them or letting them get the better of him and his own anxiety, a personal vow that has allowed him to become more focused and driven than ever before.
Having refined responsibility to an art, Akihiko dedicates himself to every project or cause he takes part in. He firmly believes in finishing what he starts, and doesn’t care to leave loose ends behind in any situation. He strives to follow everything through to completion, whether it has to do with schoolwork, relationships, or things of a much more dire nature, such as SEES’ exploration of Tartarus and all that followed. He is a dedicated student and makes an effort to set a good example for the younger students who look up to him, as well as for his comrades in SEES. Though he relinquished the role of leader to newcomer Minato for all field operations, Akihiko remained a leader in other ways, along with Mitsuru. As senior members of SEES, the two of them took it upon themselves to supervise the younger Persona users in their group, to take charge of information gathering and strategy, and doing their best to consistently keep morale high, offering Minato their support whenever he had need of it.
Akihiko is sensible, level-headed, and good in a crisis. He has repeatedly proven himself able to keep calm even when things are at their worst, always prioritizing the safety of his teammates when a combat situation got a little dicey. He cares for the people around him and always feels a strong urge to do what he feels is the right thing, having a very strong sense of justice. He occasionally gets a little preachy on this subject, though it was almost always directed at Shinjiro, whom Akihiko was always disappointed with for refusing to use his Persona to fight the good fight along with his friends, though he himself was well-acquainted with the incident that caused Shinjiro to make such a decision.
He’s a workaholic in a way, whether it’s fighting shadows or preparing for his next boxing tournament: Akihiko is constantly training, turning almost every spare moment into an opportunity to work towards keeping himself in top physical condition. It’s possible that he’ll never be satisfied with his own strength, continually pushing himself forward in an effort to become stronger and, in his opinion, better able to protect the people he cares about. He cannot abide laziness in himself or others, and firmly believes in continually pushing himself to his limits and striving to achieve excellence in all things.

[The video feed opens on an incredibly puzzled looking young man with short-cropped silver hair and gray eyes. There’s a bit of sports tape holding a bandage over his left eye. He glances once over his shoulder, and the movement of his head allows a moogle to be glimpsed in the background. The moogle appears to be a major contributor to his confusion, and he turns his attention back to the communicator, his lips twisted into a frown.]
Hello. I… [He pauses, glancing upwards. He usually prides himself on remaining calm in unusual situations, but this…] This place is unreal. Like nothing I’ve ever seen before.
[He had been told that it was a different world, that his own had been destroyed. He had never so much as left Japan. It was a strange situation to have to adapt to, and he couldn’t help thinking he might wake up any moment and find himself tucked away in his own dorm room.]
Am I dreaming?
Kupo! [The moogle behind him draws his attention, and for a moment, all the feed shows is the back of his head.] I told you, you’re wide awake! This is Traverse Town!
[He shakes his head. Really, the moogle is like nothing he’s ever seen before.] You’ve been very helpful. I’m sorry, I’m still a little shaken up. … if you don’t mind my asking, what are you?
Haven’t you ever seen a moogle before, kupo?
Sorry, no. Nothing like you where I’m from.
I feel sorry for you, kupo. A world without moogles isn’t much of a world at all!
[Akihiko nods once, but looks a bit dubious as he turns his attention back to the communicator.] When I arrived, he mentioned there were others here like me - people from other worlds, that is. Is it the same for all of us, then? Have our places of origin all been destroyed?
[Clearly, he not only finds this difficult to believe, but doesn’t much want to believe it.]
RP Sample: He had been warned more than once about going out alone. It wasn’t safe, it wasn’t smart, every possible reason he could think of had already been recited, but in the end, Mitsuru never stopped him. Akihiko had gotten her to agree that someone had to be out there doing reconnaissance, and someone had to be on the lookout for the occasional strays during the Dark Hour - both kinds. Stray humans and stray shadows.
He came across the latter more often. Usually small things, not far from Tartarus, but enough to let him blow off his steam and allow him to feel accomplished. Was it selfish, he wondered, to go looking for trouble just to feel he’d done something with himself? Probably. But he hated feeling useless. They had been wanting to explore Tartarus for months, but with just he and Mitsuru on the job, there just wasn’t enough manpower. More recruits would come, he told himself. They had a potential recruit being monitored at the dorm now, and Takeba was working on being able to make use of her evoker. It wouldn’t be long before they could start making their way to the source of all this.
As he rounded the corner near the shrine, a noise caught his ear. Something clearly inhuman, and it sounded much larger than the ordinary shadow - if any of them could be called ordinary at all. He smiled to himself, tugging at his boxing gloves as he moved towards the steps that lead up to the shrine proper. Alright. He was asking for trouble, rushing in like this, but a noise like that demanded investigating. There was nothing but shadows during the Dark Hour, and he severely doubted this would be an exception. Reaching for his communicator, he hit the switch and kept his voice low as he pressed his back against the wall beneath the shrine.
“Mitsuru, can you hear me? I think I might have found something unusual.”
