Driving On: NYC protesters emboldened in wake of NYPD aggression

Oct 04, 2011 22:02

Today marks the 18th day of the now viral Occupy Wall Street protests and the numbers of protesters continue to rise each day. Beginning on September 17th in New York City are being joined by protesters in other states in the us such as LA, Mississippi, Chicago, and New Jersey among many others.

In a rewcent build in momentum, the mass gathering has now been joined by the internet group "Anonymous" which has recently gained notoriety for percieved ties to the group "Lolsec" which hacked a number of corporate and government databases earlier this spring. Unity of the two groups is a clear sign that the protests are continuing to gain momentum despite mass arrests made by NYPD officials. Despite repeated actions of police aggression, mantras of peaceful demonstration and solidarity are echoed by protesters and speakers alike take turns speaking to the massive crowd of over 5,000. Now with the help of live streaming site Livestream.com, they can stream their message across the globe which has had a direct influence on the recent emergence of additional protests in other cities.

As Occupy Wall Street continues to flourish as a grassroots movement, one step that lies before them is the demand for a clear-cut set of demands to be put forward. It seems quite clear to any observer that the ranks of these protests contain a wide range of demographics spanning from unemployed veterans and civilians, unemployed college students, and advocated for a resource-based economy to name a few. In regards to common sense, the general consensus seems to be an outcry against social inequality and a call for solidarity among the ranks of the unemployed and the disgruntled workers nationwide.

On day 10 wall street occupants mocked protesters by drinking wine atop Wall Street's balconies whilst overlooking the disgruntled mob. On day 14 they faced yet another incident of police aggression as 700+ individuals were arrested and temporarily detained on New York City busses. In the face of these showings of force the protesters remain insistent on continuing a peaceful movement.

As the numbers continue to rise, the lack of coverage from the mainstream media becomes more and more evident. Fox news has been ever antagonistic in their blatant criticism of protesters on behalf of the conservative/tea party movement which can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9pVtUAiE8g after initial attempts by the mainstream media to ignore the protests. Conservative criticism on behalf of Fox News attempts to portray the group as leftists, and anarchists in order to attack the group's validity. In contrast, the following video shows an interview that Fox news refused to air in which an articulate young protester is approached and questoned by a Fox News reporter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IroRe9hALf8

As momentum continues to build, one can only speculate what tomorrow holds for Wall Street. Trusted source tells me that the Occupy Wall Street movement should begin to emerge with some clear-cut demands in the coming days.
