I think I'm in love with Paranoia Agent , because it's strangely charming, brilliant, and disturbing at the same time.
Satoshi Kon's works are like mature versions of Hayao Miyazaki's films with a gallon of mind rape thrown into the mix.
Holy shit mind rape.
I also love how Satoshi Kon heavily satires society, ends things on a 'wtf' note, blurs reality and alternate reality, never explains things properly, and manages to leave the audience in a very satisfactory 'I just got mind screwed to the max but in a good way' mode.
What sucks is that there are probably a lot more symbols and more interesting aspects of the satire I can't pick up on by myself. I don't know anything beyond very very basic Japanese culture. T_T WAIII WAIIII
But on a bright note even the Japanese fans have no idea what a palm tree can symbolize. 8D I bet it's probably some personal symbol the director will never reveal.
edit: Additionally, he is capable of making suicide seem cute...which is REALLY HARD TO PULL OFF IMO. D:
