Okay. So. "How To Train Your Dragon"...in 3D.

YES.

YES.

as;lasd;akdmkldnc lalalalalalala asdlkjanncalij *drools over keyboard* MOARPLZNOWKTHKZBAI!

...That's really my only reaction.

A more coherent review behind this cut. XD

First of all, the Animation. Wow. Just...wow. Everything was soooooo pretty and every teeny tiny detail just stood out at you! Like Hiccup's hair. The whole movie, I was just like, can I tousle his hair? Please? Pretty please? *puppy eyes* IT LOOKED SO SOFT!!! Every blade of grass, every leaf, every whisper of cloud, every drop if Viking sweat on their armor stood out to me and made me feel that glow of wanting to work in an animation studio all over again. ^_^

Character design: Brilliant. At first, I thought they went a little overboard with making Hiccup so scrawny (well, compared to the other adult Vikings at least) but he was actually on par with some of the other Viking trainees once they showed up in the film, so I appreciated that. And Toothless was the perfect balance of "omgsoadorable! He’s like a giant kitten!" and "Holy fuck Toothless is badass!"...also I think he's totally crushing on Hiccup...anyone else get that vibe? Especially when Astrid originally shows up? He's all like, "Oh hell no you stay away from my rider biyatch!"

This movie had such an excellent supporting cast too. From every Viking teen's personal idiosyncrasies (the one who kept quoting Dragon stats? Totally reminds me of a friend who does that during D&D sessions...trust me, it's just as annoying in real life.) to their trainer, to the detail DreamWorks put into each breed of dragon and their behavior....just, gah!!!!! I really appreciate it when a world is so completely woven with detail and realism like that.

Voice acting: Two words. Gerald Butler. *fangirls hardcore* Even when he's ranting at Hiccup, I closed my eyes and just let his voice wash over me like a soothing wave. Also, Jonah Hill's voice, while completely recognizable, really fit his Viking, had me giggling like a fool throughout the film. And America Ferrara as Astrid really impressed me, I had no idea it was her until the credits. But I think I mostly fell in love with Jay Baruchel's voice (Hiccup) throughout the course of the film. It was PERFECT! The dry tone and the witty sarcasm kept me entertained, but he also was able to project an undercurrent of long-suffering loneliness into his voice that just moved me soooo much, for an animated character.

Character Dynamics: Hiccup and Toothless have livemany adorkable scenes together, it just makes you squee. Especially the scene with the tree branch (You know what I’m talking about) and when Toothless tries out his very first smile. And while I’ve heard a lot of people say that Astrid’s eventual feelings for Hiccup showed up out of nowhere, if you pay close enough attention to her in the beginning you find that she is actually always watching Hiccup with a little bit of interest in her eyes, it just takes the movie for it to develop. And when Hiccup’s dad walks out on him after realizing Hiccup’s dragon training classes were a lie, and he had that little moment of pain and regret outside the house, I cried. A lot. The relationship between Hiccup and his father, even though it’s a poor one to begin with, is very multilayered and DreamWorks did an excellent job in portraying every aspect of it.

The Ending: Yes. Thank you Jebus, YES. Finally finally FINALLY a movie gets it right. A hero cannot fall from 300 feet in the sky without getting an injury, no matter how much the film-goers might love him. Thank you DreamWorks, for being realistic. My pragmatic side is in full-on glee mode. (And my emotional side just goes Awwwwwww with Toothless and Hiccup being the same now, gimpy tail/legs and all <3<3<3)

I very much encourage everyone to go see this movie, especially in 3D! It’s not doing too good at the box office, and I believe it will be the best movie that DreamWorks puts out all year. I’m picking up the soundtrack after work today, and I’ll definitely see it in theaters again!

Also, I will be making Toothless icons for my journal here. Especially his “You Fail,” face ^_^
