This is not my first year doing NaNo. I did it the first year it came out, and I've worked on stories in various ways in other years, too. But it is possibly the first year I'll get anywhere close to the actual NaNo goal: to write (and finish) a 50k story.
Of course, it's fanfic, so you know, still not quite there.
But I've been working up to it. I've been writing towards 50k goals in 750 all year, and while not all of it has been fiction, I've actually managed that pretty consistently. The plan, right now, is to not necessarily write towards the 1,667 goal each night, but the 11k+ place you're supposed to be at the end of each week. That gives me a little flexibility for nights when things aren't entirely working in the story, and I know I'm good for it. I don't want to get too far behind, but dropping back a little isn't going to kill me, either.
I'm also working on this idea of taking breaks in the middle of writing. Weird thought, but I figure it might help stave off some burn-out and the need to research stuff. Tonight, I took a break to look up plane flight times and to watch some
Demo Friend, and that worked pretty well. My overall word count was a hair over 2k, which isn't a bad start to things.
I probably won't be posting about NaNo every night, but I do intend to do some sort of weekly report on my progress, what I've been pulling my hair out over, how the breaks have been going, etc. As you do when you embark on a big ole project like this.
And to the rest of my compatriots working on this: GOOD LUCK! RA RA RA! *\o/*
