[justprompts] - Shower

May 26, 2009 06:48

Randall stood under the hot stream of shower hitting his skin. A hand rested to the wall below the shower head and he just tried to relax. It really wasn't working. It wasn't making his thoughts slow down.

He shouldn't have pressed her. Shouldn't have cracked insensitive jokes. Without meaning to he had forced her into telling him. And for him it wasn't even about what she had said anymore. It was the fact that it had put a space between them.

His face tilted up to the water. His hand moved to the knob to make the water hotter. He wanted to feel the heat and steam on his face. He wanted it to unclog his head.

Maybe he was always pushing her, and didn't even realize it. Maybe he was coming on too strong and too fast.

His hand ran over his face and through his hair. He leaned to the wall again and turned the shower off, then just continued to lean against the shower wall as the water dripped off of him and to his feet.

He was having her meet Frankie. Stay at his place more. He'd asked her to come meet his family. Hell, he'd cracked jokes about moving her in.

And then this...on top of it all...

He hadn't heard from her since the party. Three days.

He stood up, his hands coming up to push his wet hair back. He opened the shower curtain and grabbed a towel to wrap around his waist, then walked into his bedroom. He sat down on his bed.

And what if she did want to push him away? Have more space? Was he supposed to hold on tight or back off? He could have handled the conversation better. Could have...done something better.

He felt like he was failing an exam.

He fell back onto his back and closed his eyes.

And if he did hold on until this speed bump passed, was there all that much he could do to take care of her? She didn't need him to take care of her. Not that he needed her to need him, but all the same...maybe she didn't need him.

Nothing could be for certain until he had a chance to talk to her. He'd been letting her have her space, waiting until she called him, but he was worried how long it would take before that happened.

He rolled over onto his side.

Was that coming on too strong again? What the hell would he even say to her? Maybe just that he missed her...

Randall woke up a couple hours later and rolled onto his back, trying to orientate himself with where he was and what time it was. He slowly sat up. He hadn't even meant to fall asleep. And...he was about to be late for work. He jumped up quickly and got dressed and grabbed his things, then headed out the door.

Sleep hadn't really given him any clarity, but he did know he was going to call her. He needed to call her and try telling her once more that they were okay. And for the selfish reason of just plain wanting to hear her voice.
