Last night was our second class leading up to the big veterans day show. We grew from 4 to 8 and there are more to come. The class room isn't big enough for any more, not if we do any traveling steps.
I fumbled and stumbled and spent a lot of time staring at my feet wondering why they didn't behave. Intellectually I KNOW the steps. But I'm still counting them out. Complex combinations break down after the first 3 or 4 moves. I have to stop and think what comes next. Everyone else is on their 3rd set while I'm still puzzling out the end of the first. Let's be polite and just say I'm not up to speed. Especially on time steps.
Time steps are like the chords in a Paganini composition. He had huge hands and could master a wide range of notes most people just can't. I'm convinced that whoever invented time steps was a genius so far above mortal dancers that no one can else properly master them.
By the end of the hour I was dripping with sweat and doing better. Still not up to speed. Still seriously considering bowing out. The performance is Orycon weekend and I'm likely to have a full schedule. Hoping so anyway.
I'll keep trying for a while, but I am floundering.
