Last night I attended the first of a new series of tap classes to prepare for a BIG Veteran's Day show at Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon. I've been tapping for about 20 months. I'm a BEGINNER!
Most of the other dancers have been taking classes for many, many long years. Time step no problem. I'm still counting in my head, shuffle step, shuffle ball change, ball change, brush, hop, step, shuffle step. Repeat the other way X3 then you vary the end on the 4th time through. And that's just one of a dozen or more variations.
cramp rolls and pull backs. No problem for them. Me? I'm trying desperately to remember hell, toe, toe, heel. And you want me to turn on that?
Oh, and I'm in the shortest 1/4 of the group. No way I can hide in the back. I'll be up front and probably center, grimacing in confusion.
If I survive I'll be a much better tapper by the time this is all pulled together. On the other hand Veteran's Day weekend is Orycon. I may not have to dance with them.
Treat this as a learning experience.
