NaNoWriMo ... four weeks of crap? sounds good

I've seen mention of this year's NaNo writing thingie on my flist a couple of times over the last few days and it got me curious. Last year I became aware of the event just as it was finishing, so although I couldn't participate, I knew vaguely what it was. This year I'm in time and oddly motivated - that could just be the sniffles talking - so was thinking of giving it a go.

50,000 word novel in thirty days - impossible. 50,000 words of utter crap in thirty days - now we're talking.

I am terrible at writing anything of length. I have an idea, I start writing, but then something else comes along and I succumb like a moth to a flame. But possibly, just maybe, even I could keep my mind on track for a month. So I think I'll give it a go.

Now to the big questions:

Fanfic or original? Crime, humour, romance, deep and meaningful, horror? A Harlequin send up of mammoth proportions?
