Remember when I said I'd get this review done early? Ha!
For the 3 of you who read my reviews, I'm sorry for the wait.
Ok, opening with 3 gals out camping at night & two of them end up dead. Next!
So Sam has lots of texts on his phone to Cas. He doesn't know why the angel left. Ooooh....
But why isn't Cas responding? His beef is with Dean, not Sam. Poor Sammy.
I love the scene with the ghost pepper beef jerky, 'cause you know the only reason Dean bought it is because it had the word ghost in it. It's such a fannish thing to do! You know...we've all done it. *ahem* ;) Anyway, it's an adorable scene with Dean trying to hide how hot it is and suffering and Sam letting him suffer & being very amused and holding back the bottle of water just a little bit. Hee! :P
Seems like the boys have been monitoring these so-called mountain lion attacks where our campers have just put the number of dead up to five and Dean decides it's time to go check it out. The whole Hamill & Ford and the old badges from Season 1 and Dean continually being questioned about his ID is just precious! The boys in those jackets & caps! ♥
Ooop! I forgot about Sam's first dream as they drive at night. Awesome stuff with a total call back to Season 5's "The End", with the boys even wearing the exact same outfits! Dean shoots Sammifer in the head with the Colt, which doesn't work and Sammifer sets Dean on fire. Love the head tilt as Dean burns. Whoah. So subtly beautiful, dark, & evil all at the same time. :)
So they talk to the 3rd gal from the tent who survived, Ashley, at the hospital. And OMG Dean/Jensen is so handsome & beautiful in this scene! *swoons* I mean...how he sits on the bed & talks straight with Ashley about what he and Sam do and that he'll believe her and...yeah, I'd fall in love with him right then if I hadn't already.
They go check out the suspects, who of course are brothers. Dad is dead and one wants to kill people and the other doesn't. Sound familiar? Ha. Anyway, the boys are suspicious....we're dealing with a couple of werewolves. Back at the motel with Ashley and of course she wants Dean to sit up with her until she gets to sleep. Hey, there's nobody else I'd like to have as a bodyguard! ;)
Ashley: Do you like your job?
Dean: What do you mean?
Ashley: I mean monsters.
Dean: Right. Do I like it? Uh, I do. I mean, there's bad, don't get me wrong. There's a lot of bad. Still, it feels good to help people. You know?
Ashley: It's all just so random and awful. Wouldn't it be great if everything was just planned out for you if it was all just already decided?
Dean: No, not really.
And suddenly Dean is asleep and Sam is waking him up and Ashley is gone! Surprise!
Yep, the werewolf brothers took her back to their cabin, to a room that does not look that it would even fit in that little building. And don't tell me it was in the basement 'cause there's a window that clearly shows the woods outside. Anyhoo...The boys show up and rescue Ashley only to end up fighting with the werewolves and who else was having flashbacks to "Red Meat" when the one bro pulled Dean's gun on Sam??? OMG! But he doesn't shoot Sam, he shoots & kills his brother and then shoots himself in the stomach. Whoah! Was not expecting that and neither were the boys. Then Ashley stumbles and falls on the deer antlers that are on the floor from the fight. Gah!!! For a few seconds I truly felt heartbroken for Dean 'cause here he had promised this girl that she would be safe and then this happens! But then....SURPRISE! It's LILITH!!!
She's working for God, can't kill the boys (tho she can definitely hurt them) and is here to retrieve the Equalizer gun. The boys decide to fight, but she throws them both across the cabin & Sam ends up unconscious. That leaves Dean with no other choice but to agree to take Lilith to the gun so that she won't harm Sam.
Sam has another dream, this time of demon!Dean beating him up! And yes, same outfits as in "Soul Survivor". Bravo show! We're treated to an awesome fall done by Jared himself. And then Dean stabs & kills Sam with the First Blade. Oooh! I do miss demon!Dean! Sam wakes up, realizes he is not dead, but Dean and Lilith are gone! Time to go rescue big brother!
Btw, I really do love the way this actress plays Lilith! She's amazing! So deliciously snarky.
LILITH: Wouldn’t it be great if everything was just planned out for you?
DEAN: Let me guess, one of Chuck’s lines?
LILITH: Word for word. God… he is not exactly Shakespeare. He’s more of a low-rent Dean Koontz. I had to listen to his whole, quote “writing philosophy”. And his very weird, very pervy obsession with you. Then it always ends the same. One brother killing the other. I mean, this world… he could’ve ended it in so many ways, and… he likes that one. You know, I guess that’s why you had to see the werewolf brothers die the way they did, ‘cause… foreshadowing.
They get back to the motel when Dean pretends he forgot to bring the gun, Lilith starts cutting into Dean - the whole Death by a Thousand Cuts. OUCH! Sammy to the rescue! He shoots her in the head with a devil's trap bullet, giving him and Dean a chance to run outside but they then get frozen in place by Lilith. She's figured out where the gun is...in the Impala. She retrieves it, promptly melts it in her hand, and takes off.
Back at the Bunker, the boys, especially Dean are more lost than ever. I do love it that when one brother has given up all hope, the other is there to say, nope we'll fight on, we'll figure out a way. It's how they keep one another alive, IMO. Without one another they'd just lose the will. Which makes me wonder why Chuck doesn't just kill one of them? 'Cause we all know the way you get to a Winchester brother is to take the other off the table. They can't function well without one another. But Chuck surely knows this, so he's stretching this out, I guess. Make the boys suffer? Anyway, this is a beautiful and sad scene. *hugs the boys*
They finally realize, that no, God has not left. I thought this was silly from the beginning of the season, but...moving on! And Sam finally tells Dean about his dreams. It certainly doesn't make Dean feel better, but I like it when the boys are honest with each other and not keeping secrets.
Dean: So, what, we're just we're stuck in his in his maze still? And now Lilith is back? I mean, what's he gonna do, just throw our greatest hits at us?
Sam: I mean why doesn't he just kill us already?
Dean: Because that's not what he wants. Lilith said that Chuck only likes one kind of ending you kill me, or I kill you.
Sam: Dean. My dreams, visions, or whatever they all end the same way, with us killing each other.
Dean: You're just telling me this now?
Sam: I-I-I thought, they must've been some form of, like, messed-up PTSD, but but what if they're not? What if I'm somehow seeing Chuck's endings? You know, different ones.
Dean: How would that be possible?
Sam: 'Cause of this. When I shot Chuck, the bullet wasn't a bullet. It-it was a-a a piece of me, right? So, what if it created a-a link of some sort, you know? I-I mean, what if what if, I don't know -- What if somehow I'm in his head?
Dean: This was supposed to be over. We were done. We were free. And now what are we supposed to do, man? Do we just keep running in this this freaking hamster wheel until we die? Or until we get boring and He ends us?
Sam: Or we fight.
Dean: Fight God? Without the gun? It's God, Sam. And He's coming for us. How the hell are we supposed to fight God?
Hard to believe that the show would reveal the ending this soon, so I'm guess they're NOT going to go with one brother killing the other for the big finale? 'Cause now that the boys know that they'll ruin that ending right? RIGHT? I still don't know what kind of ending I want for the show. For the longest time I said I didn't want the boys to die, but then I read where Jared said it wouldn't make sense for the boys to have a happy ending and I can't help but agree with that. So...I still am undecided. *sigh*
A really great episode and yet another excellent directing job by Rich (his first of three this season!).
