Started writing this post sometime last year back when I first finished reading the arc, and have finally found time to finish it off. And now I'm probably going to go back and read the whole thing again

90's Deadpool was quite fantastic from what I remember of it. I think Deadpool is great, but I've found him even more entertaining when he has an ensemble cast to play off of.
He also has all the best lines in the Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 game. "Maybe you should have asked the developers for a bigger health bar."
I'm looking forward to the Deadpool Corps. Mainly for zombie Deadpool's head. The-merc-with-only-a-mouth was the best thing about Marvel Zombies 4.

So much word. Same thing's true of most characters, but Deadpool more than most. Doesn't hurt that he's had so many great supporting characters over the years (Blind Al, Ilaney, Cable, Bob, all of Agency X - the list goes on).

I'm pretty sure that was actually the title I was thinking of when I mentioned seeing even a site dedicated to Deadpool complaining about how much he's being overused. I don't think I'm going to count them as valid ensemble cast members if they're all different versions of him. =P
Thanks for this! Perfect timing too-- I was browsing the C&D kinkmeme and trying to decide where I should start for more background on the two. :D I'll definitely give it a try.
I had a post up last year with some recs from Cable's backstory too, though most of them are more 'things I read and enjoyed because I was looking for backstory details' than 'things I read and enjoyed because they were just that good' - as was the case with the subject matter from this post. Deadpool's first two limited series were okay, and I thoroughly enjoyed most of Gail Simone's work on both Deadpool and Agent X, but the first 33 issues are still my favourite part from either character's backstory. :3
There is some great stuff up on the Cable&Deadpool kink meme, isn't there? I've been meaning to put together a recs post for ages, still haven't gotten around to it. ^^;
All the darker stuff sure was one of the defining features of Kelly's run, and I'd even say it was the first big thing that really sold the series to me. Even Cable&Deadpool, with their epic break-up and Deadpool's insanity getting so bad he managed to murder a guy without remembering it, seems relatively light-hearted in comparison. I'm still a little in awe of just how dark he managed to make it while still keeping the humour intact - it's a textbook example of how humour and tragedy can be mixed so that both emphasise the other.
I feel a little weird about passing judgement on recent Deadpool when I've read so little of it, but the general impression I've gotten is that you're dead right. The comic relief aspects seem to have been turned up so high that's all there is left of the character, which is such a complete waste of potential.
