xxxHOLiC/Tsubasa post apocalyptic AU (draft) - Part 3

I never had much interest in X fanfic back during my early days in the fandom - it seemed like one of those CLAMP series which just didn't work in a way where fanfic would be able to capture the same mood. In fact, I got that impression with so many of my early big CLAMP obsessions that it was quite disconcerting to find myself getting so hooked on ( Read more... )

Sorry I'm never timely in responding to these... I try not to read them until I have time to compose a proper reply.

First of all...

GAAAAAHHHH! Leaving off these was just plain evil. "Acid storms" evoke horrible images, and the guys are out in it... *shudder* And I don't know who is in the Tower, but if they're nasty enough that Kuro-pon won't send anyone out there alone... then holing up there to wait out the storm doesn't sound like a viable option either.

Very nice job of telling us a lot about the political line the camp has to walk without just dropping in a huge chunk of exposition. The Diet and the Tower are the big guns in the area, and Kuro's camp has to make nice to both sides while making it clear they aren't taking sides.

I do like Watanuki's bewilderment. I'm sure he was pretty useless at first, not being accustomed to helping with stuff like this, but I suspect he put all his effort into it. I worry that he was hurt worse than he let on to Doumeki... I remember having worried that what he called 'just a bruise' on his thigh when he was talking to Doumeki was worse and that what really set the spirits off in his old camp was his blood being spilled.

And I think he's got a point. No matter how crazy these people are, if they value Sakura's innocence enough to protect it, they're ok. (Though I bet he'll figure out that Sakura choses to cling to her kindness out of conviction, not out of naivete (damnit, can't spell tonight.))

And I like Watanuki's extremely hostile, denial-laden worry.

Please post more soon. This is not a comfortable cliff upon which to hang!

'Tis fine, well-composes responses are always worth waiting for. ^_^

The Tower, the Diet Building and the acid storms are all aspects stolen from the Acid Tokyo world which the Tsubasa characters went through a couple of worlds ago. Just about everyone in that world came from X - if you didn't pick it up, Fuuma's the one in charge of the Tower, and most of the other Dragons of Heaven/Dragons of Earth are some of the more important residents living in each (the interesting little twist being that Kamui and Fuuma are leading the opposite groups in this world to their usual ones from X). Ultimately they all turn out to be friendly enough, but they're not all that welcoming to outsiders - there aren't enough resources in that world to share out very far.

However, while I don't have the full story, I think Kurogane's problem with the Tower is not so much that they're that nasty as that he got well and truly sick of Fuuma flirting with him every visit. XD

Very nice job of telling us a lot about the political line the camp has to walk without just dropping in a huge chunk of exposition. The Diet and the Tower are the big guns in the area, and Kuro's camp has to make nice to both sides while making it clear they aren't taking sides.

And in the long run, they're a lot better off because of it. There aren't many other camps in the area who've managed to tread that fine political line the way they do, and any new hostile gangs that show up get cleaned up by one or other of the two big powers quickly.

I remember having worried that what he called 'just a bruise' on his thigh when he was talking to Doumeki was worse and that what really set the spirits off in his old camp was his blood being spilled.

I think a lot of what really happened there is hazy even to Watanuki - stuff he'd block out of his memory in self defense. But the nastiest thing remains that I'm pretty sure he wasn't exaggerating when he said he'd lived through worse. You can at least rest assured he'll be well on his way to a proper recovery soon.

And I think he's got a point. No matter how crazy these people are, if they value Sakura's innocence enough to protect it, they're ok.

Watanuki certainly has no illusions about what a lot of camps would do with a girl like Sakura if they ever got their hands on her (and Syaoran may be protective, but he's not over protective for this world by any stretch of the imagination). Discovering how they'd taken care of her was a big leap for him in starting to realise these really were people worth trusting.

(Though I bet he'll figure out that Sakura choses to cling to her kindness out of conviction, not out of naivete)

Very well put. Like everyone else, there's more to Sakura than meets the eye. She's not naive by any stretch.

And I like Watanuki's extremely hostile, denial-laden worry.

In some respects, he's really not so different here, huh?

I'm trying to keep to roughly weekly updates on this story, so it shouldn't be too long before I have more done. But for a world like this, I've got to do the occasional cliffhanger, don't I?
