Animania + One Piece cosplay pics

Expanding on that last post I threw together last week, despite a mildly disappointing turn out, Animania was a pretty excellent con experience. There was some fantastic art on display in the artist’s alley (I picked up three BRS prints from a table just a few down from ours, which may mark the first time I’ve ever bought fanart prints) and in a ( Read more... )

Easy! All you need is three Christmas baubles, a length of polystyrene pipe, and lots and lots of hotglue. (Heck, the grey sections are made entirely out of hotglue! Versatile stuff.) Now, a working clima tact - that's a slightly different kettle of fish. Or possibly more of a barrel of eels. Myself, I'll leap at pretty much any project that gives me the excuse to use another arduino these days. *g*

By Wai-con, I'm hoping to have the third section blowing smoke rings.

Just curious, would you ever consider selling this? This is the best Clima Tact I've seen!

You'd never get me to part with the original, and don't think I'd be able to sell the bubble-blowing section in good conscience anyway (it's incredibly fiddly to use and has already required repairs several times). You might be able to talk me into making a second one with the more robust lightning and new smoke-making sections as a commission, but you'd be looking at a price tag somewhere in the order of hundreds of dollars to cover parts and labour, and it'd have to be in a period when I'm not already flat out with my own cosplay projects (so July at the earliest).

That's fine! I'm just able to start working, and by the end of Summer I'll have plenty to spend. In the hundreds sounds perfectly reasonable; especially considering the craftsmanship of it. I have a few questions though ( ... )

1-2. Metal's out, I don't have the tools to work it the way I do plastic piping, let alone make all the notches needed to get the switches in. The pipes I use are very solid though, and it'll save a lot of time and fuss since I know what size they come in and can reuse the same templates I made for the first one ( ... )

Thanks! I actually later modified the third segment to spew smoke too. Photos here.

It's going back a fair way to remember now (this post is actually more than four years old!) but IIRC, most of the cutting was done with a hacksaw, with the christmas baubles held in a bench vice between some soft padding. Hell of a job - spheres are not an easy shape to work with, and trimming them to the right size to leave out the grey inset was annoying as anything. I eventually wound up making a half-sphere out of clay to fit inside a half-bauble, just so I'd have something solid I could use to force them to hold their shape while I worked.

The screw connections I think I installed by buying some thinner pipes with screw connections on the end and gluing them in. You can see part of the screw threads here, on the section I made to detach on the chain.
