Violent fights are normal in hockey. It's a rare game when there isn't at least one fight, and sometimes they're pretty damn bloody. It's completely legal to ram an opponent into the boards as hard as you possibly can (hard enough to break the glass in some cases) -- as long as you do it in a league approved manner. "Hits" is a recorded stat, and I'm not talking bat on ball.
Sean Avery calls an ex-girlfriend "sloppy seconds" to the press and he gets suspended indefinitely? What the hell?
Granted, it's an incredibly crass thing to say, though I'm not surprised by who said it. There definitely should have been some form of discipline. A fine, a sitdown with the commissioner, a game or two off, but indefinitely? I agree that shit should stay on the ice -- cause God knows they all say worse to each other every night -- but come on!
What he said, if anyone's interested, is:
"Uh, I'm really happy to be back in Calgary. I love Canada.
"And I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about.
"Enjoy the game tonight."
(I stole the quote from
Puck Daddy @ Yahoo.) It's in regards to his ex Elisha Cuthbert currently dating Calgary's Dion Phaneuf.
I actually think it would have been much more exciting if they'd let him play tonight and suspended him starting tomorrow. Woulda been interesting to see Phaneuf's on-ice reaction.
