So, as you know, I am now a student of Ball State. It will be official tomorrow, when classes start. Yikes.
I’m going to try and give you a recap of the past few days. I really love detail, so forgive me if this is too long. It’s just been a crazy six days. I need to learn not to get in the habit of skipping days of writing in the journal.
Tuesday evening I went out with Jennifer, Nick, Krista, Leigh, Kourtney, Brittany, Chris (The Fox) and Chris (The Frosch) to eat Mongolian barbeque. Afterwards, some of us went to Fry’s, where I became extremely annoyed. I was trying to find The Man With the Screaming Brain on DVD, and they had it on the database, but I searched through the horror, science fiction, and comedy sections, and they have the alphabetical order so messed up. I didn’t get the movie after all.
I returned home and finished my packing and went to bed at about 2:30. I woke up at 6:30 to take my shower and get in the car by 8:00 to go to Ball State. We arrived right at 9:00 and there were people outside to help us unload the car and get everything on a flatbed. I went inside and checked in, and we went up to my room on the second floor to unload all my things. By 10:00, I had all my clothes in their rightful places and my bed was made. Mom and I went shopping for a few things, and then we ate lunch at Cardinal Crossing in the Student Center and picked up my textbooks. Then, I walked Mom out to her car and said goodbye.
I went back to my room to unpack a little more, and then Nick called. I went downstairs and helped him move in. He’s very close, as I’m in Schmidt and he’s in Swinford - we’re in the same complex, but different buildings. I met his roommate, who is a little odd, and his roommate’s parents thought I was Nick’s sister, which made me laugh a little.
After Nick had his things in his room, we hung out with Dawn, Jack, and Schmitty and walked around the Village and stuff. Later in the evening, I went with Dawn, Benji, and Benji’s roommate Josh to Wal-Mart so they could pick up some things, and then when Dawn was near Woodworth, her complex, I heard my name being called. It was Alex and Brandon! I was glad to see them again. Dawn went upstairs to her room, and I hung out with Alex and Brandon all night, as well as Eric, Brandon’s roommate Corey, and Nathan, who Brandon had randomly met. Nathan is a sophomore who lives in the brand new Park Hall, and he was Keaton’s roommate last year. We hung out in his room, and it was really amazing. The air conditioner was so good, we were freezing.
We went out walking, and we sat and chatted at Beneficence until it was lightning and thundering and we decided it was a good idea to go inside. We returned to Nathan’s room, where we hung out some more, and then around 2:00, we left. It was raining heavily, and I walked with Brandon, Eric, and Corey to where our dorms were (Eric is in Lafollette, and Brandon and Corey are in Swinford, so we’re not far from each other.). I went upstairs to my room and brushed my teeth, and then I collapsed on my bed.
I woke up at 7:30 to take a shower, as Kayla, my roommate, was going to be here early. I met her and her family (wearing “Kayla’s Moving Crew” shirts) downstairs at 9:00, and I helped move her stuff up. Brian, my cousin, was moving in as well, so I had to go help him, but I told her that if they needed to move anything, they could touch my stuff, as long as they were careful.
I walked to the Brayton/Clevenger end of Lafollette, and I helped Brian move in. It was nice to see Aunt Jeanne, Uncle Steve, and Grandma and Grandpa again. Everything went well, except the television I was carrying fell back onto my chest slightly and gave me a small little wound.
We walked to the far end of campus to eat at Elliot dining, and it was good despite the walk. However, I did see Shannon, Paul and Eli, and that was pretty cool. Although honestly, I know a whole bunch of people on campus, so if you walk with me just a little bit, it is guaranteed I’ll find someone I know. I was walking Grandma and Grandpa to my dorm, and Jessie yelled at me from out of her car window. She was getting ready to move in at Brayton, the same as Leigh.
Back at the dorm, Kayla and her family had made some huge progress. They moved desks and dressers and the television shelf was up, but more importantly, the loft was up. And they had gone to Wal-Mart and bought me a bag of Tootsie Roll Pops...that was awesome. I was sitting on the floor and I said, “I love you already!”
You can definitely tell the difference between our sides of the room. Kayla’s side is pink and full of things and posters, while my side is blue, and a little bare on the walls right now.
Kayla’s family is big and friendly, and they were so awesome. They had to return home, and they had a big drive, so we had to say goodbye. Kayla and I talked and fixed the room up a little bit, and then I hung out with friends.
We had a mandatory meeting with our floor, and our RA introduced herself. Tarrah is awesome, and I think we’re going to have a lot of good times this year. After the meeting, we went to a athletics convocation that was mandatory, and after that I hung out with Alex, Brandon, Corey, and Anna again. Anna is on the same floor and hall as Krista and Becca.
Anna and I walked back to our dorms around 1:00, and there was a guy who was walking the same way as me when we passed Lafollette, so I asked him where he was, and he said he was in Schmidt on the third floor. He had just returned from a frat party that was broken up by the police. At least he was still coherent and very polite...
Friday, we did some more work on the room, and we had a mandatory freshman convocation that was very lame, and I found where my classes were. Not much went on except I hung out with more friends, and Grant came to stay with Leigh. We went to Hurst and stole popsicles from Benji and borrowed Josh’s copy of The 40-Year-Old Virgin since Leigh had never seen it. We watched it in her room, since her roommate is missing in action most of the time. Then, Nick and I walked back to our dorms and I went to bed.
Yesterday, we had no mandatory things to worry about, so I was hanging about people’s dorms a lot, as well as having a little free time to myself. In the morning, I went to the poster sale and bought two posters. One is of James Dean, and the other is of the Smiths (Shyes!). My mom came to the campus at 5:00, but when she called me, I didn’t get service, so we were yelling at each other from the start, and so the first impression my roommate got of my mother and I together was not so great. Oh well, it got better. I called Leigh, and she came over and helped us take the futon parts upstairs, and then we went to Target and Hobby Lobby. Mom took the three of us girls out to eat, and then we returned to campus. Leigh went back to her dorm, and Kayla, Mom, and I put the futon together and found out the shelf organizer she bought had a wrong piece, so we went back to Target to exchange it.
I got my Smiths poster framed and hanging, though when I returned to the dorm later, it had fallen off the wall. I couldn’t find a frame for my James Dean poster, so Mom took it home with her. That made me very sad.
Mom left around 9:00 or 9:30, and then Kayla and I met up with her best friend J.D. (who’s in Swinford), and we went to Late Nite. It wasn’t as fun, really, so we were walking around and their friend Danielle was at a frat party and didn’t know where she was. She wasn’t drinking, but she was alone and didn’t know where she was. So we walked down and found her. Now, I am even more convinced that I do not want to drink. I was harassed by drunks, and I found Erika and Stephanie, and they seemed very nervous because they didn’t know where they were going either. Once we returned to McKinley, I decided to go back towards the dorms. I called Nick, and he was with Krista, Becca, Leigh, and Kristin, so I joined them. I also met Krista and Becca’s RA Mandy - she was very sweet.
Nick, Leigh, Kristin, and I left after 1:00, and Nick and I walked Kristin back to her dorm all the way out at Studebaker West. Or, well, Nick and Kristin decided to tap into their acting skills and act drunk all the way out there. They are good. Seriously good. People were completely convinced they were drunk, and wouldn’t believe me when I said they weren’t drunk. We even had a guy, a senior, leading us back to Stu-West, and he was drunk and thought we all were. It was insane. Luckily, Nick didn’t pull that stunt on the way back to our dorms.
So, it was a rough night for me. I felt very awkward, and very lonely. I didn’t know what to do.
I hope not all Saturday nights are going to be like that.
I slept in quite a bit today, as did Kayla. We’re both being very lazy and don’t want to get out of bed. We have two mandatory convocations today, though, so we have to get up. She’s taking her shower now, and I’ll probably be doing that shortly. I thought it was funny earlier. We were both watching Boy Meets World while sitting on the futon in our pajamas eating cereal. Bonding? Heck yes.
Like I said earlier, classes start tomorrow, and I’m a bit nervous about it all, but I think I’ll be okay. I just have to keep telling myself that everything is going to be all right.
