I'll be honest, it's hard for me to feel all patriotic. You can point most of the blame at my job. One other school in the system would play a piece of classical music every morning over the intercom, I think on the theory that classical music helps boost one's brain power. So our school started playing music too, only since it's near a naval base, it's all patriotic music.
Every Monday and Thursday for the past five years I've heard the national anthem over the intercom. Every Friday it was "I'm Proud to Be an American." On some other day it was "God Bless America." And apparently I've blocked the song for the remaining day of the week out of my head entirely, but trust me, it was patriotic as well.
So yeah, it's a pedantic complaint, but I'm sick of hearing those songs. I love my country, but I don't blindly worship it. So now that the actual holiday is upon us, I'm filled with an overwhelming sense of... meh. Let's just see one fireworks display and eat some hot dogs and get it over with.
But just because I'm bleh on the 4th doesn't mean you have to be. Enjoy it!
