Visa Issues

Ever since my first round in Japan, I have been using Being A Broad as a lifeline. Well, for the first time, Being A Broad failed me.

You see, according to BAB, you must exit the country to switch your tourist visa to a work visa. Going to South Korea to do so is the most popular option, so this is what I was planning on doing. I contacted a friend and told him to keep his floor warm, because I would need it for a few days.

Or not.

Apparently in the 10 years since that book has been written, the laws have changed. You no longer have to exit the country to switch your visa. However, there is a considerable waiting period: 6-8 weeks. This makes me nervous on several points. First, what if my tourist visa is nearing expiry, and second, can I really go 6-8 weeks AFTER I find a job without a paycheck? Actually, make that 10-12 weeks, since I would have to wait a month after I begin working to see my first paycheck. I'm attempting to find out how much time it takes to get the visa from the embassy in South Korea, and if the process is expedited there I will be forking over the money to take my visa trip after all.
