Newkirk has compiled more than 50 thought-provoking, original essays written by an intriguing, diverse group of people-including actor Sean Astin, who has been outspoken about mental-health issues since his legendary mother, actor Patty Duke, was diagnosed with bipolar mood disorder. In his essay, Sean talks about the positive influence his mother has had on his life and his efforts to make a difference in the world. He participates in a bipolar-disorder-awareness campaign and he has launched a Web site to help people recognize the symptoms of the disease. He is also a spokesperson for the National Center for Family Literacy as well as the Verizon Literacy Campaign.
